Hello fellow /out/ists

I got about an acre of forest near my house and I'm looking to clean it up a little and build a trail through it (not one of those gay paved trail just a normal one)

So far I've been using a motor scythe to get rid of some of the undergrowth and bushes.
what else should i do, any tips?

Consider certain types of evergreen shrubs that you can train into walls to make things feel very private and secluded. Hemlock, Taxus, Boxwood, Privet.. topiary varieties of plants. You can really make an acre feel personal and private.

Pay attention to the lay of the land as it pertains to drainage. Drainage will be the most important thing. If you get that wrong it can fuck up a lot of shit.

Get yourself a trail building manual; the ATC trail treatment guide or a book called Lightly on the Land are both used by pros I've worked with.
Honestly if it's flat and dry, you don't need to do much besides cut back undergrowth and invite friends over to trample it down. If there are muddy areas, either get a sledge and make some gravel, or dig mineral soil from under a fallen tree's rootball to put down.

Wheels harm trails less than feet. This is because they roll over. Horses are really bad too. Of course morons spinning rooster tails will always fuck everything up in short order.

Privet can get dramatically out of hand and is pretty invasive in a lot of places, for what it's worth. You leave that shit alone for a year and good luck getting it out at all.

Make your rough trail with your weedwhacker and then go find your local high school boys and girls cross-country team and get them to run laps on it to really break it in. Make them sign wavers first so they don’t sue you when they inevitably break an ankle or get raped while running your trail.

this is something i have thought about often. The thought has once in a while crossed my mind to open a trails building business. But, i know nothing about trail building. If anybody has any experience building trails, it would be cool if they would post some resources we could all learn from.

My tip would be if it snows or has water where you live think about that now or you'll end up with something like this (forest service employes people from hot dry areas that have never seen cold)

Ew throw it out. Cut that shit down and plant a wildflower meadow instead.
As for trails, monitor and write down areas of note over the seasons. A particular area might consistently be muddy, consider digging a wildlife pond there. See what parts get wet in the winter or other seasons and either reroute your trail or build a bridge over it.

No but I actually might. And I have posted this before or this one. I keep the pic on my phone when I run into trail crews, actually they are the nicest/reasonable people, and say "this is going to happen unless you make water drains".
