The fishing thread on here is awesome, but where are my fly guys at?
How have you been spending this winter? Do any tying or fishing?
What are some questions about gear, casting, or flies you may have?
Pic related. A trout I caught on Thanksgiving from the Irondequoit.

Does fly fishing actually work in cold weather? If there are no bugs hatching then fish don't go after anyone, right?

Of course it works. It’s often slower pace and you have to work harder to be successful but yeah you can still catch fish for sure. Midges dont stop hatching, they will keep coming off, not as many, but they will be there. Middle of the day is the best when it is the warmest. The cold water restricts the movement of the fish and they become very lethargic. Everything you throw should be subsurface whether that be nymphs or streamers. Don’t try and get fancy, use what works. Stick to zebra midges, worm imitations, egg imitations, and pheasant tails. you can try woolly buggers but in my experience i haven’t had much success. Cover water, be precise, be patient

Was just out yesterday. Size 20 rainbow warriors have been working the last couple times I went out but no luck yesterday. Ended up catching this guy on a black wooly bugger. I have had good luck with size 8 or 10 wooly buggers in white. black or thin mint during the coldest weather by stripping them through tail outs.

You'll be hard pressed to find fly guys here, which is why we should have our own general to begin with. Anyways, I sold my 5wt setup and now I don't have a fly setup. Thinking about getting a 3wt, may build myself a 2/3wt fiberglass rod.

How can I avoid ever having to learn to fly-fish? I've been able to do well on trout with a spin-rod and panther martin inline spinners, can I just put flies onto my line for smaller streams?

You can add split shot, casting bubble, and or a kast master just remove the hook and add a leader with the fly

2/3 fiberglass is what I used for small stream brookies. I enjoy using it so much i’ve brought it out to catch bigger things too. biggest fish i’ve caught on it so far was a 4lb large mouth

I've got a cheap 2wt and a 7wt. I'm a scrub though, I'm better at trout fishing with microcranks on a UL rod than I am at nymphing, and I'm a disaster at floating flies for anything that isn't a sunfish.

I just need to put in the work, I think that I'm gonna change my "after work" truck rod from a UL 2 piece to my 2wt.

What do you fish for with the 7 wt. I'm trying to decide whether to get a 7 wt or 8 wt. I do some float tubing for pike and largemouth during the summer and need an all around rod.

Just got a new reel for my 5# and a new 7’ 6” 3# for the little blue lines. Broke my skunk yesterday in the rain. Spent hours high sticking a wooly bugger to see if it would work — it did.

8# will give you a bit of an edge chucking streamers and casting in the wind. I’d go with the 8#. Also, if you get a reel that can handle the salt, you can pursue stripers or red fish. I’m a trout weenie who occasionally chases bass, but god damn, is sight fishing reds on the flats fun.

I'm most proud of that fish I think.. It's one of the largest. it's the most local water I have to me right now - an 8 minute drive. It's definitely wild.. and I caught it with a lot of effort and adjustment on a little nymph. Hiding out way under an undercut rock.. I kept trying to get deeper and further underneath, until it worked.

Is an 8 wt enough to fight the wind on the coast? I live in an east coast state with really good striper fishing but never have gone. If it could pull double duty for pike and strippers that might be interesting.

The closest salt water to me is Hudson Bay, but that's still 700 miles.

Most trout steams near me are tiny and tight quarters (last one I fished was the Onion River which is under 5 feet wide in places), and I have no idea how to fly fish for Lake Trout.

Hmm, yeah. I’m far from salt too. I’d still recommend and 8# for bass and pike fishing, though. It makes throwing streamers all day way easier.

How much difference is there fighting the fish. The bass in my area don't get too large will an 8 wt make fighting a 1 or 2 lb bass boring?

It’s all about ease of casting for me when using the big-boi rods. My ideal rod for a fun fight for small bass is my 5#, but then casting large streamers and poppers is an ordeal.

Nice pics. Brings me back to my days fly fishing in the Rockies. Haven't cast since Summer. I just moved to Ontario but caught my first large mouth and an Adirondacks brown during the summer. Boy saw some big ass browns there at a bridge but no one fishing was very good. A bit crowded out east. And black flies make fishing in remoter areas a real hell.
