Sudden phobias

No.1670883 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Help me /out/. I've been sea kayaking solo for years, travelled hundreds of miles of non tidal waters, always been a good swimmer and loved the water. I'm pretty confident in my paddling abilities and gear, but have developed a sudden fear of being on the water.

Last time I was out there the wind picked up suddenly and quite a strong set of waves came with it. I didn't capsize but found the experience mentally and physically exhausting to battle with. I was only 500 metres from shore but water and air temp was below 10c, so I was quite afraid of going in, mainly fear of sudden inhalation due to cold water reflex. Since then I have nothing but dread at the thought of being on the water. Has anyone experienced this? I can't find any other accounts of sailors kayakers surfers etc suddenly developing a phobia of the sea. If not sea related, any experiences of suddenly becoming phobic of camping or hiking solo?
