bushes/trees: blueberry x8-10, apple-4-6. these take up relatively small space and the gains are a lot.
veggies: corn, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, okra, green beans. These are all cheap and some of the easier crops to produce in mass. learn to can.
animals: as many as you can afford housing for: rabbits and chickens, 2 cows max. rabbits and chickens are cheap as dirt and produce like CRAZY. cows are high yield but very high risk for the money. buy 2 calves and raise them. eat one, sell one. you have vet/butcher expenses with them as well that can hurt. if a rabbit or chicken dies - who cares. if a cow dies - its an expensive loss.
I have lived on a 16 acre farm almost 40 years. there are good years and bad years. if you don't put in a lot of work then you cannot do this lifestyle.
