I have pic related and some thin US wool blanket and they're both fucking garbage.
The polyester blanket I got for Christmas is literally double the warmth of them both
What gives? A lot of military surplus stuff is great, but the wool blankets are outright dangerous

And you're polyester blanket is warmer probably because it is thicker and holds air unlike the shitty wool blankets. You can't say wool blankets are shit if you buy shit

Another thing is that wool products have been getting thinner over the years. You can't get super thick wool blankets anymore. And, with everything being made from Merino wool the prices are sky high. It kind of fucking sucks. I had an old Pendleton blanket from the 1970s that got destroyed 3 years ago. That thing was amazingly thick and warm. Now, its all "MERINO WOOL 80/20 BLEND TWIN SIZE $200." Blankets for my King sized bed are near $500 and still a Merino blend.

Fuck Merino wool. You are supposed to use a god damn sheet between you and the itchy thick blanket so you don't need to wash the blanket nearly as much or get itchy.

It'd be cheaper to raise my own sheep, make my own blankets then eat the sheep.

lol I have 2 of those for my truck to move shit. They smell like chemical death. They are also shoddy, as in literally made from shod material so they fall apart pretty easily.

I have legitimately thought about purchasing sheep for land, and go through the pain and hassle just to make wool products that are 100% new-wool because army blankets and new wool material just has shredded wool added to it and sell only to /out/ boomers

If you want a warm blanket you'll need to get,

Hudson Bay 8 Point (expensive as fuck, stinky, thick)
Poyet Motte Aubisque 500GSM Heavyweight (good price, thick, itchy as fuck)
Desert Breeze (thick, good price, itchy)

Remember to use a sheet and never wash these if you can get away with it. You have to dry clean them yourself or hand wash unless the tag says otherwise. I'd never machine wash a wool blanket anyway.

So stop bitching and make your own, then. My GF makes her own merino wool sweaters. It costs somewhere between €20 and €30 per sweater. I haven't seen a 100% merino sweater in Europe for less than €70.

I've got a genuine Italian army blanket that's 100% wool. Pretty warm, and not itchy at all. I even slept in bed with it for a while before taking it out for the first time.

I don't know that I'd rely on it and only it, but it's a good piece of gear. Get yourself a bivy to break the wind, and maybe a flannel sheet as well, and you'll be set down to the low forties or high thirties. Lower if you use fire.

It's excellent for clothing, but it's idiotic to make blankets out of it. Well made wool blankets don't stink or itch in my experience. At most, they're a bit rough to the touch and have a noticeable, but not unpleasant, odor. None of which matters unless you're a big fat pussy.

Just make sure your wool product is/has....

- 100% wool or near it.
- Thick or heavy, more wool = better.
- Plenty of air pockets, not tightly compressed.

Some military items do this right, especially if from countries with wool production and manufacturing tradition (central and southern europe).

But yeah, materials and craftsmanship matters!

Lots of companies make GOOD wool products, but you have to know the very, very basics of wool clothing to know about the materials and very, very basics of warm clothing to know how insulation works and how much is enough.

Also, even wool has its place, don't expect it to replace everything, but instead look where it fits in your layered clothing and/or your specific environment (if it's not cold enough to require layers).

Dry cleaning is just cleaning with steam, mostly. You can get set up to do it for like $150 on Amazon.

just handwash the wool with the right soap (Eucalan, etc). I buy used wool stuff all the time that says dry-clean only, even suits, and just handwash and air-dry, they are fine. A little wrinkly for thinner stuff sometimes but thicker wool should be fine.

They didn't dry clean wool in the 1200s

Actually...they did and even further back than that. The only thing that has changed is the type of chemicals used. Fullers used ammonia (sourced from urine), Fuller's earth (bentonite clay or palygorskite clay), and lye (sourced from wood ash) to clean wool. The same cleaning process was used when wool was too dirty to simply beat out. Water isn't used because water itself shrinks wool, not just hot water. This sort of thing was done at least as early as the 4,000BC.

Yeah, first time I took it out was late autumn in the western Mojave. I learned the hard way that cowboy camping with only a wool blanket isn't a good idea without a wind break of some kind. I think if I'd had a bivy though, it would've been more than adequate, and it's certainly kept me warm on chilly nights at home.

God that sounds miserable. The Italian wool definitely saved my ass when I was on a trail building crew, a thin bivvy around the blanket just to keep heat from escaping on top of a foam pad and I was good to go all the way down to 27 degrees

Oh, dude, it sucked ass, but not in the sense that I was freezing and shivering all night. It was just cold enough that I could never quite get comfortable, and even with a pair of sleep socks my feet were cold the whole night. Tried getting up close to the fire, but the rock ring we had was a bit too tall to get any warmth unless you were sitting up.

The pad I had at the time wasn't particularly helpful either. I had a Klymit Static V Recon, which I suppose isn't a terrible pad, but it's nowhere near as supportive as a Thermarest, and it was too small to stretch out as I prefer.

Between all that and the wind chill, a particularly bright full moon, and the coyotes singing half the night, it's a wonder I got any sleep at all. Suffice to say, a few lessons were learned after that.
