I posted four months or so ago about getting my dream job in Antarctica. Well, I'm down here now and having a great time and thought I'd share some pictures. Sorry for the poor quality, the internet is really slow here. Any questions, ask away!

I'm a field guide here. There are lots of jobs...from mechanic, to chef, cleaner, driver, carpenter, electrician. Check the jobs board for your national Antarctic operator (google them for more info).

I went xc skiing today, pretty good fun even though it is very flat where I am at the moment.

I'm a pilot working on my commercial license and one of my dreams is to fly down there. No clue how I'd manage to get into a job like that, but fuck, flying a Basler Turbo DC-3 on skis sounds so fucking awesome.

If you are working hard (xc skiing, for example) -3 celcius doesn't feel that cold. Especially since the air is so dry here. That's Antarctic summer ofc. Winter, when the sun goes down, is a different game. Down to -30 regularly.

My co-workers are a good bunch. They have all been through the same recruitment process, which I guess is designed to weed out people who would not do well in this environment. They are a varied lot, with loads of interests and skills.

I'm here for 18 months. Room is nice, shared with one other guy. Small but comfortable and there are good facilities in general.

Best way is to get a job here, which is quite difficult as there is a lot of competition. Best thing you can do is get experienced in remote environments, cold places and get good at what you do. Tourism is a mega expensive way to get here...look at brochures from White Desert and ALE. Some people come here with ALE to do /out/ things like skiing, climbing, skiing to the pole but that too costs a lot.

What trade? Carpenters, steel erectors, mechanics, drivers, waste disposal techs...basically everything that a society needs to function, we have down here. Find out when they post jobs and check/apply regularly.

I'm a field guide. Basically I use mountaineering skills to keep scientists safe in the field and help them with the work they do.

Recruitment process...research the jobs, apply, if you are lucky get an interview which usually includes a technical appraisal, for example a plumber might be asked how they would fix certain problems, or what certain things are.

How far it'd sink in depends mostly on the snow, not the poop itself. I imagine most of the snow in the antarctic to be very icy and rather dense, so it probably wouldn't sink in at all. Except when there's fresh snow, then I'd except some sinking, maybe through the feshet layer, perhaps even by melting som of it too. I don't think it would be warm enough to mud up the surroundning snow, but this probably depends more on the consistency of the poop. At -3 °C, which is around midday as OP said in one of his replies, it should take some time, especially if the poop is freshly out. I think it would be steaming a bit, this depends mostly on the liquidity of your poo though; the temperature difference would be enough I am sure. Now that last question, how far you could fling it in one sweep of the shovel, that depends just on you and a little bit on the mass of your poop. If you do it right and pick it up to really use your whole body in that throw I can see how it'd fly around a hundred meters.

The pay is not amazing but that's because jobs here are so desirable...mot people want the experience. I imagine most people take a pay cut to come and work here, but then think that you don't spend anything while you are in Antarctica. I spend probably £10/month on various things, compare that to if I was paying rent etc. and it makes more sense financially.

Living on base, you have no expenses at all. Food and accom are provided, as are toiletries and all clothing and equipment needed for work. You can buy postcards (which I will send to the anon above, I have emailed), t-shirts, trinkets and alcohol (bases have different alcohol policies but they are pretty sensible imo. Cider, the only thing I ever drink, is £1.50 for a bottle.).

In a nutshell, the policy is 'be sensible'. You have to be ready to fight a fire or deal with an emergency, so no getting drunk. People know their limits and have good discipline. Drinking ends at a set time as well, everything is done on an honour system; take a drink, write in book and it comes from your pay. I haven't seen cash in three months.

If you want to have that kind of time, don't come to Antarctica. That guy may have been telling the truth, but bear in mind that the ratio of men to women here is (approximately) 10:1. I imagine some national bases will be different. National operators are doing what they can to encourage more women to apply and the number/proportion of women south is increasing, but slowly.

Also, this is a work environment, so it's important to remain professional, sensible and conscious of the impact that actions may have on others, given that we all live and work in very close confines.

We run, ski, gym, read, play board games, socialise, play music...most things that people do back home.

For example, if you have backpacked for three weeks in northern Sweden, or skiied with your tent and equipment across the Hardangervidda or Iceland, that kind of thing would probably help.

The internet here is pretty slow. It's a decent connection but shared between lots of people; those on this base and those elsewhere. Browsing Moroccan hat feathering forums is fine but videos, downloading and playing games are all impossible.

Terrain varies a lot. On the ice shelf it is very flat with occasional windscoops and some enormous crevasses (near the McDonald rumples, and chasms 1 and 2 and halloween crack. On the continent itself it depends where you are...ice streams are very crevassed whereas other areas are less so. There are some mountainous parts, which are different again. We use skidoos to get to lots of locations, part of my job is taking people on recreational climbs too so we do that more 'alpine style'.

Most of the meteorites found are from Antarctica-mostly because, in areas with no natural rock (just ice) they are the only dark objects around! The areas people go to are 'blue ice' areas-most of the ice is covered in a layer of snow, but in blue ice areas this has been scoured away. In winter the strong winds even scour away the ice, leaving behind meteorites. Imagine a glacier the size of a city that flows towards one point the size of a football field...it's a simplification, but it explains why some areas have loads more meteorites than you would otherwise expect.

Hi Antanon. I want you to look at a map of Antarctica and point out for me what would be some of the most inaccessible/remote mountains you can find. Something a mountaineer wouldn’t even consider but that a human could still manage to climb albeit with tremendous difficulty, inconvenience, time & effort.
Choose as many as you like.

First off, have a look at Damien Gildea's 'Mountaineering in Antarctica'. It's a big coffee table style book.

I wish I knew more about the mountains of Antarctica; so far I have climbed on Adelaide Island. The rock here is often not very good quality though the snow and ice climbing is decent.

Generally towards the centre of the continent is far harder to access. The peninsula can be accessed by yacht and there are some commercial operators who do just that, to climb or ski.

I've shat in the snow several times (Canadafag hejre). Generally, it doesn't sink. It steams at first, but this depends on the temps too. As long as it's below zero, it will freeze, just a matter of time. Faster than you'd think, though. I've usually buried it after because leaving your shit out on white snow is just rude.

Other than that, there are operators who do short trips ashore from cruise ships. Personally I wouldn't bother with these; it's like 30 mins per person at some penguin colony. Sums even for this are likely to be in the high four or low five digits. Where are you from, anon? Does your country have a base or bases in Antarctica?

Personally, I'd say it's not worth spending a day in Antarctica to 'tick it' (sorry if this isn't your intent). I have no personal desire to visit all 7 continents; if I do, I do and obviously having now been to Antarctica helps.

I'm from Scotland and I love the place; it's great in summer and winter, depending what you like. Othewise, Norway in winter can be quite 'polar'; big, rolling snow covered plateaus and deep forests. I like the alps in summer, mostly for climbing but also for hiking and running. The Dolomites too, for running and rock climbing. I'd love to visit the Polish and Slovenian Tatry and the Caucuses as well as the Himalayas but that will have to wait...I'm in Antarctica till April 2021!

I've been up to the Arctic with the Army, I loved the time that I got to spend up there. I've been thinking about finding some civilian job in the Arctic (or maybe even the Antarctic), once I get out of the military.

Oddly enough I have met Leo Houlding. He was at a RAF (Royal Air Force) base organising an air drop of equipment for his most recent expedition (to somewhere with lots of jungle...can't remember exactly, maybe Madagascar?) while I was doing a short course. The film of that Antarctica trip (Ultavatenna? or similar) is worth a watch.

Hi armyanon, pay for a field guide is c£25k, contract is normally 18 months for first trip. Taxed at different rate, 7%. Hope that helps. Day to day varies a huge amount, sometimes lots of driving skidoos, sometimes lots of carpentry style work, or walking a long distance on glacier...hugely varied.
