It averages out to a balanced and cost effective meal structure personally calculated for my body by me. I could be a bit better, or a bit cheaper, but I value some convenience.
I spend $7~$14 daily on food, but live in very expensive area where food cost more. Feel pretty good after seeing $21.57 ~$25.71 a day is the American average. I had an old diet of ~$2.50 a day, but it wasn't healthy long term, think I could modify it to work at $4 a day, but too tired to cook most nights. Found eggs and jiffy mix could be more cost effective than Ramen noodles if you planned it right with coupons and such, but again not long term thing.
As for gear I only use a cereal container and a few sporks as my kitchen most days, will use cheap microwave for fancy nights for warm food or tea (but tea cost money).
