I was watching vids about the aftermath of ww2 and the USSR, noticing that most of the people sent to the gulags didnt make it. Id think that for an /out/sdoor 1950s man it wouldnt be so complicated even if its Siberia, but i was wondering exactly how would that man survive and escape safely. Bear Grilms (idk how to write it) did an episode survivi g there, but it wasnt to my liking.

I made this thread as a roleplaying fun idea.

Well to be fair, if you had just escaped the gulag, you are probably only 80 lbs and 0.6% body fat at that point. You would die pretty quickly and the wildlife would even care to eat your severely malnourished body.

Thats why i said "siberia" and "escaped from a gulag". How hard would these factors affect your survival? How would you hide your camp fires so the patrolling soldiers wont notice you? Or how would you defend from the hounds they send, in the middle of the taiga forest? Small things like that.

Hurry to find a cabin of some sorts.
If you know they are looking for you, you can use the footprints you leave behind to your advantage.
If you dont find food and or shelter in the next 2 days youre fucked.
Try to get some sort of weapon.

You're most likely fucked anyway sneak back into the gulag from where they dont expect it and try to go full rambo until you end up getting shot 30seconds later. If you just manage to kill one of them youll be a legend.

Assuming I somehow manage to not freeze to death and my malnourished body is even capable of gathering something edible, I still have to cross an entire hostile country and the entire hostile eastern block.
That's unlikely to be a surviveable situation

You're probably right but I think we need more info. What did we escape wearing and how long do we need to survive. It's true that even a lot of out/ists would be woefully unprepared for real-deal no-shit survival, but desperation is a strong motivator. I think our survival rate would be a little better than 1%.

One of my favourite out pastimes is foraging so I'd be fine for food, but I know fuck all about bushcraft and shelter building so if it was winter I'd be fucked

She was born and lived in an established settlement. The question was about escaping a gulag. I assumed with just the clothes on my back. Most of us would have a hard time scavenging food in that environment. Shelter building would be extremely hard without even a knife/axe to aid yourself. Fire making would be for only the few who know how to make a bowdrill and use it. Again without a knife. All three of these things combine to an extremely low percentage.
