So /out/ I'm going camping in 10 days, and I need to get my camping gear, but all I have is a sleeping bag, and a pocket knife right now. I have about 300 dollars to spend, and I'll be camping in southern BC, so weather won't be a problem.
TL;DR babbies first camping kit, for under 300$

In return... I don't know, I have infographics, and out related pictures.. but that's pretty much it.

take my advice friend, scale down your stay, about 3 day maybe, but long before that, make sure you can:
build a fire
build an emergency shelter
basic navigation
and from there on there are countless websites with camping packing lists, go ask good she always know,
please don't go into the woods unprepared, that is how people get in real trouble real fast

No it's a 3 day two night trip. I've gone camping tons of times before, but it was always with my dads gear. I just don't have any of the stuff I need, but I don't know what the barebones of what I need is. like cheap back pad, cheap tent, cheap cooking stuff.

okay I just assumed it was your first time due to you referring o it as babbies first camping kit, but any who, if you don't mind the weight and is looking to save money surplus is always a good bet, if you have gone camping with your dads gear, just look for the type of items you would bring of that

I believe you can buy "cabin kits" nowadays, you could buy a small one and improve on it over the years

My dad's got like all top notch stuff. He's rich, and he was in search and rescue, so all if his stuff is like A+, except his knife.. which is a kabar.. no idea why he'd land on that, but whatever. I'm thinking I'll get the same.

Any idea what the cheapest cooking/mess kit, and pad would be? (within reason, I don't want to cook out of a campbells soup can, or sleep on a pile of fiberglass)
Also I'll look into surplus, but I think my local surplus store has a limited selection.

Get a tarp, a roll of paracord, a bic lighter, a lightweight tin set of colllapsible cooking utinsels from the walmart outdoors section, and a bag to put it all in. This is all you need to be comfortable out there. You have fire, shelter, and a way to purify water as well as something to sleep in.

milsurp canteen and drink cup(10$)(this is your ghetto cookset)
cutlery(not necessary 5$)
hickory handled axe(30$)
handsaw(20$)
poncho(dont cheap out on this 30$)
paracord(100 feet or more 10$)
lantern or flashlight(10$)
mosquito headnet (3$)
cheap fulltang knife(preferably a used/offbrand bucknife 20-30$, try to spend as much as you can on a knife 80$ is preferable and will get you a brand new buck knife guaranteed for life)

normally half your budget would be buying a tent but since you already have a sleeping bag you could just buy a tarp/poncho and set them up, i also recommend getting a mosquito headnet if its bad where youre going.

heres more budget bushcraft im not sure if you plan on going fishing or hunting but going on 300$ is a walk in the park:

dont think it is a hiking trip i read camping in OP.

having a saw/axe is great to have anyways unless youre camping in a lotted suburbanite campground where you cant touch trees.

I said that(I the OP), but I think I misrepresented what I meant. The walk to where we're camping won't be brutal. It's not really a hike, it's more of just a woodland walk, off the trail.
Consider it what you will, I'm considering getting a hatchet, or small axe, is there any axe that's agreed upon to be a decent entry level axe? like the mora of axes?

so i use the cold steel(lol) trail boss axe its cheap(35$) and fairly well made compared to /out/s extravagant preference of 100$+ gransford bruks.

a handsaw is also useful as well as a chainsaw blade saw, all can be done with an axe though.

Could be because it's a pretty good all-around knife. I don't like the grind angles on it and don't think it cuts all that well because of them, but I can see using it. Also consider the cool with your buddies factor.

OP, you need to take a trip to your local Wal-Mart. They have stuff that'll get you by until you decide what you do and don't want in your good, long-term stuff.
