A good set of pliers is almost mandatory if you're a serious offshore fisherman. I've seen someone bend one of the cheaper aluminum pliers trying to get the hook out of an amberjack. Aluminum pliers are great for lighter duty stuff since they don't rust.

Leopard shark is basically find an okay sand structure, soak your bait, and just hope they find it. Mackerel cut in half is always a solid bait to soak for any sharks. You might not even need structure for them but putting your bait in structure does increase your chance
Calico is pretty rare on the beach unless you have rocks, grass and kelp near the beach. You are more likely to run into halibut rather than calico. However, it is winter so calico bite is tough and halibut might have moved into deeper water.

On this beach it is all rock and kelp forests and the water can get really choppy. Would I need braided line or mono? Is 20lb mono decent for sharks greater than 36" and calico? I'm deciding to target leppy sharks because they're actually abundant at these beaches.

I believe the most prized fish to be caught here is cabezon. How suitable will a 12' rod be for all of this?

12’ would be good for soaking bait. What is your rod’s line rating. I mostly fish lures so I can’t really tell you much about that style especially in that environment. What rod and reel you are using? 20 lb is okay but 40+ mono might be more reassuring among all those rocks and making less likely for fishes to tangle you up. I wouldn’t use straight braid but if you have limited capacity for high test mono then braid backing with a long long leader might be the best of both world

20lb line would not be suitable for 3ft+ sharks in a rough and weedy environment. And all you're talking about is soaking bait, any big spinning surf rod will be fine. You're also gonna want some trace leader of some kind for shark fishing, not only for their teeth but they also have rough skin

Do local people use 12 ft rod for that area? I would personally go for 8-9 for area with rock and kelp since it’s hard for a beginner to get max distance out of a 12ft rod. You might not need max distance anyway, especially in kelp/rock area as there would be more kelp/rock to pulll through the further you throw. 8-9 ft rod would be easier for you to hold you would want to quickly pull the fish away from structure when you get the bite.

I think I read somewhere that braided has a better chance at cutting through kelp in case of getting caught. I'm also keeping in mind that if I'm fishing for calico I keep no slack in the line and reel fast so I can keep the fish from going back deep into the kelp. By soaking you mean just letting it float right? Could I do this by drop a weight with a 3 foot line attached with the bait. So this way the line stays low but the bait floats 1 to 2 feet above the seafloor?

They’re going to start stocking one of the local park ponds with trout at the end of the week; I’m not amused that I now have to either pay daily rates for trout license or pay full price for a license that expires at the end of next month, but on the plus side I now get to fish trout.

I currently fish minnows and trout worms for panfish, do I need to go get a fly rod and learn how to do that, or can I continue to use my current rod/rig for trout fishing?

Trout can be finicky, but stocked trout aren't too hard to catch.
I'd recommend using your current setup since you're already used to using trout worms.
Unlike panfish, trout are line shy so you may have to use a fluorocarbon leader.
Once you get the hang of catching trout you can try a fly rod.

Too bad trout season closed on September 30th here in Ontario.
Some rivers have extended seasons in the sections near Lake Ontario but you can't really catch much there and its always overcrowded.

Man that is terrible. Season here closes the first day of march and reopens again on the second week of April and this is only for waters which are stocked. Native trout streams out in the middle of no where remain open. Winter is one of the best times to fish, no bugs, no spinfags, no boomers. You can fish the most popular stretches of river without seeing a soul.

Almost all stocked trout ponds in southern Ontario (pay per entry or pay per pound caught) close in October-November and only reopen in the Spring.

And by bottom of the barrel, I mean nobody taught you anything from the get go. Knot and set up is the very basic stuffs of fishing and can be pick up in minutes with the amount of info now in the internet. Harder stuffs are finding structures, finding fishes, self servicing reels and installing and setting up my kayaks. Those are more complicated stuffs that I had to learn by myself. Even now, I still run into some confusion when servicing an unfamiliar reel. I still never can get spinning reel to run as “smooth” as right out of the box for some reason (I think the grease I use is slightly too viscous compared to factory’s grease). Conventional/baitcaster is easier for some reason for me.

Most game fishes are better. All they need is light seasoning and an adequate cook. Mackerels are pretty good bait for those tasty halibut and yellowtail but you can have those leftover mackerel in my bait tank at the end of the day.

Live bait and a good rod holder. Blues have big mouths, even the small ones, so a 0/9 circle hook is ideal. 0/6 will work too, can fit bigger bait on them as well as a 9. If its a river, fish bends or behind where the water swirls. Thats structure.

I've only caught up to 30lb blue cats out of reservoirs. But for me, my M bass rod, 3000 reel, 20lb braid mainline, .5oz tungsten barrel sinker, 30lb mono leader, and a 6/0 circle hook worked fine. I didn't lose any fish or destroy any gear, but I had a lot of room and time to play the fish out and had a net handy to land them.

For river fishing, you'll want heavier gear because there'll be more snags and you're fighting the current in addition to the fish. Something like a H rod, 4000 reel, minimum 50lb main line, at least 1oz of weights would work. Live bait works well, but you can get them just as fine on dead or cut bait which are both easier to deal with. Buy some frozen shad from a bait shop or bring a smaller rod with you and catch some bluegill to use.

I used to fish when I was a kid, like 8-10 years old; my grandfather made me a cane pole, but I learned how to cut bait and pull brim off my hook.

I picked it back up when I turned 30; this board (and the pastebin) taught me enough basic stuff to get comfortable going out to local spots. I spent a lot of time not catching anything and making rookie mistakes because I was too embarrassed to ask anyone for advice - don’t be stupid like me, ask people. I watched a guy catch striped bass one after another at a local spot I consider to be nigh impossible to fish, and he even offered me bait and to show me how to catch ‘em, and I refused because I was embarassed (like a moron). I missed out on sage wisdom because of my pride, and I learned my lesson there.

I can catch fish now, but it took a few months of “casting practice” before I figured out the bait and the techniques that work. Keep at it and learn from experienced anglers.

Went out for trout with a mate last weekend, this slightly older dude approached me while I was taking a piss near the road we parked at. Snow around the edges keeps wind from getting underneath it and reduces drafts, but doesn't decrease the stress on the spring loaded hubs. There are guidelines you can stake down, but the factory ones aren't so strong that the wind can't break them and anyways you can't stake the top up.

I put my spud-bar in the snow when i was unloading the car and it vanished. $80 gone never even used it, not that i would have had to.

I would make a few adjustments, distance between bobber and hook, I'd have sink 5 inches above the hook, and I would reconsider my bait. Id generally fuck around with those things, and bobber/hook size aswell until something worked, unless it's a particularly shy or picky species you're looking at it's one of these things. Also if you are not sure what exactly it is, it might be some small dumbass fish that only eat like grass or algae in which case you are wasting your time, throw a net at the to make sure I guess. Although 11 out of 10 times I'd fish a worm 40cm deep on a small hook and use whatever bites as bait for pike or large perch I reckon, im not much for vegetarian fishes.

Honestly mate just get rid of the bobber and start throwing a spinner 35 degrees across to the other size and fish at 1/3 and 2/3 depth at any pace. Walk any direction of your choosing, my tip is start a good walk from your car and work your way home. Spinning beats passive fishing every time if you ask me. I only rarely fish anything stationary unless I'm targeting lazy pike or large perch with bait fish. seriously, though, i fly fish for pike. i mostly fish for them in rivers, and mostly use a floating line. as for sinking lines, you're really going to need a selection and your choice is really going to depend heavily on the exact situation.

It depends on where you fish. If fishing deep or fast water a sinking line is a lot better than a floating or even intermediate line. I fish a really deep lake that used to be a quarry. I use a type 3 sinking line there and might get a faster sinking line for this season. I find pike are a lot more interested in the retrieve than what the fly looks like on most days so a sinking line plus aggressive retrieve keeps the fly in the strike zone longer. When you fish a steamer on a floating line you need to add a ton of weight to it which makes casting suck and every strip brings your fly closer to the surface and away from where pike might be lurking.

Once the ice is thick enough I drive my snowmobile or truck out there, but early and late season I drag a sled by hand. I have EVA puzzle piece floor mats for when I'm going to be out for more than a couple hours, and my 7x7x6 hut is just barely big enough for a Swissgear cot when I want to stay out. I've got a complete Surplus ECWS 4 piece mummy bag system, so I'm comfortable even if I decide not to sleep with the heater going. I've done Friday Night to Sunday Afternoon before, but that's not that great compared to a wheelhouse.

When I finish restoring my K5, I'm probably going to make either a lightweight skid house or a light weight wheel house.

first off, that will work, i did it for years, but it is incredibly dangerous. i've almost filled my waders with near-freezing water one too many times to ever reccomend it. if you stud them, then you should be able to get away with it, but you'll be wishing you had ankle support.
i have and love my frogg toggs Pilot II waders, and you can get them on sierra trading post for ~120 usd right now. get some proper wading boots to go with them and you wont regret it.

Wait for the flounder to make an appearance and throw a mullet on a carolina rig and just drag it. You'll catch flounder. White perch are fun and a spoon or a curly tail will land them easily. Just get out and fish for a bit. Even if the bite is slow it beats sitting at home dreaming of fishing. If I wasn't busy I'd be on that winter speckled trout bite.

Worm/bait on a hook and bobber will work just fine.
You can also use small jigheads (like 1/16) with artificial plastics.
Yellow Perch are pretty easy to catch, they'll eat anything. They're also great for eating if you're into that.

they typically school (although fully grown units have been known to go solo). Unlike other panfish they don't build nests and rely on brush piles and weeds. It's unlikely to catch them in clear open water unless the school is on the move. They are typically hanging out in deep water with the exception of the summertime when they explore the shallows.

I don't like air cooled sleds because you are far more likely to blow them up in the late season warm weather I use mine in, dragging loads when the ice is no longer safe for my truck. I have a 2001 Arctic Cat 500 EFI twin. It is liquid cooled, under 450 lbs, it has approximately 60 horsepower, and it will go 100 mph given enough space on a hard packed trail. I paid $500 for it 3 years ago and have put spark plugs, a drive belt, a power valve gasket kit, exhaust gasket, and a jug gasket in it. I also replaced the track with a good used track off ebay and put new carbides on the skis. All in all I've put about $300 worth of parts on it.

It starts on the second or third pull every time. I've pulled a sled with 200 lbs of gear and another 250 lbs of snowmobile-less buddy in it over several miles in snow too deep for my truck once without overheating it or burning up the drive belt. I've also taken it to the top of Carlton Peak in 50 degree early spring weather.

Apart from all of the usual 2 stroke things, the biggest things to check for are broken or damaged suspension pieces, and the intermediate shaft and bearing.

This is an incredibly good deal, your american right? Did you search around for this or Is it a pretty average example.

This Is what I assumed would be the biggest things to watch for but its nice to hear it for sure.
Any sources or sites that sell parts would be welcome aswell.
Google doesnt yield many results in terms of fixing and building old sleds.

Where you at? Winter saltwater fishing is slow here in NC. You're lucky to nab a few speckled trout or flounder that stick around. I usually wait till spring when the shad run pops off and the striper show up in the rivers to spawn and I dont go back out to the salt till summer and the spanish mackerel show back up.

When I bought it we'd had fairly mediocre snow winters for a couple years, so the market was low, now we've had a couple of good years in a row here in Minnesota, so basically any running sled will be at least a grand, and EFI is a very worthwhile upgrade, so EFI sleds like mine are basically $1500-$2000 for any trash that moves under its own power. My sled was in working order and I drove it for half a season without any work having been done to it, the work I've done to mine was some preventative maintenance, but mostly chasing leaks to improve performance. I buy parts from Country Cat, Dennis Kirk, Ebay, and Amazon. Country Cat has most of the parts drawings for Arctic Cats online. Other places have this information for other brands.

I'm likely because there's a lot of oem and aftermarket support available in Minnesota because we have both Arctic Cat and Polaris. I like Arctic Cats (I think they ride the best and are the most dependable), but Polaris makes aftermarket decent sled too. I'm not a fan of Skidoo, but my prejudice is based on a shitty Skidoo my old man had in the early 90s. Newer Yamaha sleds I don't know anything about, but I don't know anyone who owns one, except for a 90 Bravo, so that might be significant.

Hey, I'm studying in northern Norway right now and I want to get into fishing. I fished a little as a child but not much. You need a permit for freshwater fishing and the only good freshwater spots nearby are mainly for salmon or trout, but those can't be fished until July so I'd prefer to just shore fish in salt water. There's an island called Håkøya nearby (where the Tirpitz sank) and I've been told there's a bunch of fish to be found there, but mainly cod and herring. I'm guessing that as a beginner it would be best to go for herring. If so, what kind of setup do I need for herring? And if not, what would be best for cod?

Winter bass usually requires a boat/kayak with electronics since they are normally in main lake basin. Blade baits jigged around bait is key or alabama rigs. If you are on foot and have lakes/rivers find out if they have warm water discharges from powerplants, feeder creeks, water treatment plants. Fish can be stacked in these areas and can be often caught with spring patterns. If you fish ponds you may need to fish near the dam side where it is deeper. Drag with a jig to find rocks and alternate with dropshot or slowly fished lipless crank. Hardest time of year to fish for bass from shore though and requires you to fish really slow. Much prefer trout, crappie or musky this time of year.

Another thing I find to work in winter is scent is more important and float and fly with a slipbobber can work near pond/lake dams. Smelly jelly shad is my favorite and i use it with larger maribo jig under a slipfloat.

Don't fish for Herring. Cod can be jigged from land although its not ideal. Throw 7-10cm jigs out and then them donk the bottom, you can do this with spoons aswell. From boat use large spoons or jigs and fish deep. For mega cod use medium sized dead flounders as bait and fish them at the bottom. A great misconception is that cod eat Herring, which they do, but the big ones can't catch them so they eat flounder instead since they are afk most of the time. Reminds me kinda of a flicker rig which we use for live bait for flounder out here. Only difference is an egg sinker is rigged like a Carolina rig and you use beads and the willow blade at the end near the hook. Sometimes you add a float before the blade and beads if you want it higher in the water column.

I think eating your catch has been stigmatized a lot recently from overzealous fishermen with lots of racism thrown into the mix but as long as its done within the limits I have no issue with it. Not to mention farmed fish has its fair share of ethical and environmental issues as well.
Nothing beats a delicious freshly caught trout on the grill while out camping.

I just used little pieces of white bread and saw results, specifically the shelves/end pieces, but then again I was also catching nothing but Fathead Minnows. Then again I was throwing my minnow trap in places I could -see- the fish.
Actually, now that I'm thinking of it, will a minnow trap catch crayfish?

My dinking setup is almost always ice jigs with a bit of worm under a bobber. I do find in all honesty a tiny hook works better, a lot of small fish can inhale the jig head whole, and then as the "head" pulls through it knocks their lips out of the way of the hook unless you're super gentle.

Get some polarized sunglasses and look for them. If the water is super stained just find the deepest holes and throw some bait or imitation bait in. I suppose you could also chum but I have never had to resort to that. In the warmer months you can almost always find babies schooling and swimming about confirming there are fish populations spawning.

I've got 8 crappies to filet before I go to bed tonight, got on them with my brother this evening. I'll probably have him over Tuesday to eat them up. My rules for eating fish are that they need to be from a healthy population living in clean water and they shouldn't be what you'd consider a large fish for the species and water. In the lake we were on, I'd consider a crappie over about a pound and a half to be too big to keep. I've caught crappies up to 2 1/2 lbs there, but 2 lbs is a rare crappie in that lake, and I prefer to leave the big ones to breed.

Save up and by Simms G3 or G4’s.if you want a pair and you fish a lot; all others are pretty much a waste of money.

Waders make fishing streams and rivers infinitely more enjoyable, no snags on shoreline scrub/trees, you can most times retrieve your lures when you get snagged (has saved me hundreds of $$). Most importantly, you can get casting angles that you can’t get from the shoreline.

The real secret is not buying shitty boots. Snag the low-profile boots Simms makes in half sizes. Their more expensive boots are like astronaut boots and if you’re a half size, you going to be stuck with some clown sized boots having to go up half a size. I personally use canyoneering boots made by Bestard for my wading boots; they give tons of traction and support, are slim and look good.

I just bought a cheap pair ($50) and so far they have been comfortable and kept me bone dry. From what I gather from other fisherman most waders will eventually leak but I will be interested to see how long they last. I have been keeping them free of thorns and sticks and I also don't sit down in them / lounge around and just generally don't exert unnecessary pressure at any seams. I also don't hang them to dry in UV light. If I had to guess a failure point I am assuming the boots will eventually crack but if I get a year or two worth of use out them I think it will be worth it.

Trying to figure out if I should buy an Aldebaran BFS or splurge a bit more on the Calcutta BFS HG. Quite disappointed that Shimano didn't release any new BFS reels this year.

Disagree. I buy 60 dollar Hodgeman H3 waders every time. They generally last me a year and a half of hard fishing (Hiking into remote spots through brambles ~60 days a year). Simms cost like 600 dollars so they would have to last 10 years to make it worth buying them.

Boots on the other hand I agree with. I used to buy cheapo field and stream boots but I destroy them in 6 months. Spend the 200 bucks on a decent pair.

you only need waders if it's cold. i mostly wet wade, and i do so with a pair of neoprene socks and my wading boots. i honestly wet wade more than i use waders. if you're wet wading you dont need to worry about putting a hole in your waders, you dont need to worry about filling up your waders if you fall, you dont need to worry about wading too deep for your waders.

basically, waders are only necessary if it's cold. if you don't fish in the cold, you don't need waders.

Water temperature is just as important. I fish mountain streams which stay freezing temperature all the way to July, no damn way you're wading without them, unless you want to go numb and drown.

I wouldn't recommend wet wading in suburban and urban watersheds. I mean you can but the trade off to properly clean yourself and clothes afterwards doesn't seem worth it. Plus you will just generally be at higher risk for bacterial and viral contact which I don't want on my skin.

But your larger point is still valid, if the water is clean you don't need any special gear to get wet and start fishing.

There's obviously areas where is 3ft deep for 300 linear ft out, but I rarely fish them because the bigger fish move in with the deep colder water that gets sucked in when the wind blows off shore, during the later part of spring.

I'm fishing in western Lousiana, I can see Houston off in the distance. Don't have bait, some shrimp indicators, and a shitload of random tackle. What's good to target with around here? Trying to get a good idea of what baitless lures and rigs produce in this part of the gulf. Is it even worth it during this season? I've stopped fishing with shrimp because I'm only pulling up catfish with it.

I don't believe in bait colors, from the most outlandish to the most natural will catch fish. It's also not bluegill but fish in general, you can literally throw trebles on a block of wood and catch large-mouth. I think the most important thing is action > scent > shape/outline. It also follows that most fish that don't *hunt* their food require you to put some sort of actual food to entice the bite.

It depends on the species desu. I had a day where the snook would literally not touch a DOA shrimp in rootbeer but the second I switched to glow they started biting. There are certain fish that are very picky with colors.

im going to have to disagree, profile is more important than scent for lures. as for colour, i think the most important thing is that the fish can see it.
my evidence against the importance of scent is that none of my flies smell, but they catch fish. bass, pike, steelhead, carp, they all eat flies, and none of the flies smell.

Flies are still going to have great action to make up for no scent, lack of scent isn't going to turn away a fish in and of itself. You can catch tons of species of freshwater fish with artificial dough baits containing no actual food and have practically no action other than simple sinking (some even just float).

Cod fishing is easy just get a big rod that can cast some weight and a shimano hyperloop for a reel because its cheap and it works. Throw pick related with some bits of mackeral, mussels etc and you will catch cod, sole and flounder maybe halibut if you're really lucky.
I life in iceland and sometimes i fish cod like this but its pretty boring because they dont fight at all and you have to wait alot which is really cold. But I built a kayak this winter so when it is warm i am thinking to set some longlines and do this same rig plus some jigging.
Trout and laks are much more fun to fish for, they are expensive with the licenses but it is worth it. If you want to use lures in saltwater you can try egi for squid but it is quite diffuclt here in the north
