Spring Green to the West of Madison has a lot of good places. Bluemounds are out there, as well as close proximity to Devils Lake.
If you want an outdoor life, not just weekend trips, definitely the Northwoods or UP. I'm from the north originally. Everywhere around the outskirts of Hayward, Minocqua, Eagle River, Ontonogan, etc. Lots of great places right in your backyard. You can live as modern or pioneer as you want.
