I'm heading out to Big Bend NP tomorrow to do a short overnight in the park. I'm planning on forgoing to the tent and sleeping in a US military gortex bivy. I'm slightly concerned about bugs and snakes cozying up next to me. What is /out/'s experience here?

Bring a head net for bugs so you don't need to have the bivy fully closed to escape them. I'm guessing as it's a gortex military thing it doesn't have a mesh window?
Don't sleep in a snakey spot and you'll be fine.

i dont have snakes in my country so never had to deal with them..
what would you say is a snakey spot? what should i avoid?

Camped in summer and fall a few years back. If you are in the higher elevation it will get colder at night. If you are near the river it can get warmer and more humid. Watch out for Javelina and skunks, be smart about your trash and food.

Not that anon but it should be cool enough that snakes shouldn’t be a huge issue. Be careful walking through thicker brush, don’t set up your bivy next to holes or tall grass.

Shouldn't be a huge issue in the winter as they'll be sleeping. But your best bet is to look up the types of snakes that are going to be in the area and what sort of places they like to make their nests in.

Texas has copper heads, cotton mouths, and rattle snakes. The former 2 are more common near the water. However it's winter so they won't be an issue at all as snakes hibernate. Just don't stick your hands in weird holes or anything. As for the bugs, after theres been a decent freeze they aren't a big issues.

Also forgot to mention, you're going on non peak season so the park is gonna be pretty empty and dehydration is way less of an issue. Honestly it got some incredible hikes and small mountains and theres some older historical buildings there you can check out too if youre into that. It's one of those hidden gems that's not heavily travelled and you'll have a great time.

I camped there for a few nights and strangely stick bugs were everywhere by the river. I found some crawling on my leg several times. No snakes that I saw. Take your passport and cross over into Boquillas. It's a total shit hole but you can say you took a rowboat to have a few shots of tequila in another country

Bivies are sweaty and uncomfortable. They are a good backup to carry around if you're sleeping on a bare ground and are surprised by bad weather but they are not alternative for a tent if that's what you're used to.

There are different types of bivvy. The stage alone ones that are meant to be a shelter by themselves. Imo these ones are grim and s u c k to ride out any serious weather in. But you can get lighter, more breathable, but less water proof bivvies. They are meant to be paired with a small tarp and offer protection from mist, splash, bugs, and wind. I use one regularly and love it.

OP here, got back last night. I ended up freezing my ass off because I didn’t pack the 3rd layer of the MSS bivy so I got horrible sleep. No bugs or animals except for a friendly deer. Big bend is pretty damn cool, because Of MLK weekend it was pretty full but nothing like more popular parks. 1/?

I'll get better answers here I suspect than the other thread. I'm considering a borah bivy in argon 90. I am specifically targeting temps from 50F to 10F. Is the Argon 90 okay or will I be pushing this too far? My biggest concern is winter wind, upper PA weather. Some people telling me I need Event, some people saying the sleep system and tarp are more important.

I have a borah bivy. It's job is to minimise drafts, keep bugs out, and protect your sleeping bag from splash. It _may_ add ~5f to your sleeping bags rating. But this is very subjective.
Do not even consider it as being a source of insulation.
