Wouldn't a couple of pencils and a tiny sharpener be more suited for "harsh" conditions? You don't need to worry about temperature or dirt messing with graphite.

Pencils, realistically, are probably the best choice. It’s more mental than anything as it just doesn’t feel permanent - as if I’m writing in the sand. I’d be willing to pay the price if there is a true alternative

Here you go. Freezes at about -20F. You won’t want to have your hand out to write if it’s any colder than that. But it’s a pen. It’s going to run out of ink without warning. At least with a pencil you know how much “lead” is left

Writes on all kinds of things, including skin, and can be used a the lever in a tourniquet if need be.

I use a body marker. They're the single-use sterile pens that surgeons use to draw on you as a guide to where to cut. They actually last just as long as any other pen and will write on anything up to and including skin covered in wet blood. Perks of being a nurse.

Get good pencils that have real wood. Not compressed plastic fiber shit. Then use your pocket knife. I can get mine needle sharp. Pencil sharpeners are dogshit. As soon as you think it looks good - it breaks. Then you grind another half inch off your pencil.

Fisher space pens are the go to for field notes, also some rite-in-rain notebooks will hold up a lot better to a little moisture than your barnes and noble leather wrapped journal

for pencil use a carpenters pencil or a jumbo pencil. I use the faber castell 9000 Jumbo 3b pencil. A look into a staedtler mechanical pencil ain't bad.

Or if you a cool kid use a LAMY safari (i got the special edition black). I also know there are types of ink that are sold at gouletpens that can withstand arctic cold sorta conditions...least I think so. Noodlers make 'em so look for a general word search. Use bullet proof anything from Noodlers cos USA BAYBEE.

Parker Jotter with a Fisher Space Pen refill is what I used while working a job that had me filling out paperwork outside when normal ballpoints froze. Ordinary BIC pens are plenty durable if it’s not below zero or wet. Ultra fine point sharpies work great in the cold and can write on anything.

I always have a pencil, a Zebra pen, and a paint marker (I think Sharpie is similar) in my EDC. Though most are not that useful when /out/, they can come handy in the everyday life. I'm not ultralight.
