You don't have to have a giant log to split with an axe to make a good Swedish torch. Just take a bunch of small logs about 3" (8 cm) in diameter or smaller and stand them in a circle around a short log and tie the whole thing up with a rough cord made of a branch or bark. Light the fire in the middle and Presto! you've got a good cooking fire without having to fuck with any logs or a hatchet or anything like that, just cutting a few small branches.

Also called a "buddy burner." He makes them in the little round tea light candles.

You can make one out of a tuna can and it will fit neatly inside a coffee can. You can then cut down a coffee can to a couple of inches taller than the tuna can, put holes in the sides of the coffee can at top and bottom, and use the coffee can as a windbreak/pot support for the tuna can burner. It won't boil water fast, but it'll boil water. The tuna can is the burner, the coffee can is the buddy, hence the term "buddy burner."

It's a great idea for when you're taking scouts innawoodsing for the first time. You spend a meeting getting ready to go and making those burners so everyone can cook their own stuff when you go /out/ the next weekend. It's genius in that way.

And it'll light any old wet log.

No, but I'm sure you are supposed to make them on site, not carry them around.

I use a rocket stove so I can grab a few dry twigs and get a super hot fire for cooking.
