Just moved to a coastal city.

Interested in getting into crab and shrimp fishing. Anyone have any experience in that? What are the basics? Can I do it from the shore or do I need a boat? What do you look for in a spot to set up your trap? What should I budget for traps, time, etc. Etc. Etc.

which one? that matters immensely. Crabbing is vastly different on each coast and has differences depending on region within coast too.

Isn't crab fishing more a job than a hobby? If so you'd be better off learning it by taking a job with a local fisherman.

Consider what your actually trying to do, often it is hard to find a place to set a trap without a boat or access to a private dock to keep the neighborhood kids out of your catch. Consider handling from a public dock instead, in crab infested water you can easily catch a dozen crabs for dinner in a session.

You typically need a boat since recreational spots are over crabbed from idiots taking undersized ones.

Alternatively you can catch crab with a rod and reel from shore using a device called a crab snare.

Really depends on where you're at. You can get a skiff and set a trap or two off shore using plastic bottles as buoys so people might not notice them floating. Really though your best bet is to go to the wharf during crab season and ask someone to take you out or just sell you some crab.

this is all correct. dungeness and red rock will be your target species. chicken legs, cat food, or fish guts should be in your trap. get a license and adhere to the laws. I get crab all summer in the PNW, check the pots once or twice a day.
