Hey, /out/. Can you convince me to just leave my life behind and travel?

Here's some info: I'm 18, in college, and have been wanting to do this since I was 16 and read a thread in /b/ about a modern hitchhiker/hobo.

I want to just leave home with a few supplies and find my way just traveling. I'm so bored with life and could never see myself having a traditional lifestyle of school>work>marriage>kids>death. It's all so meaningless.

Anyway, I came to you guys because I've been lurking here since /out/ opened and you seem very knowledgable. Pic not related.

No, because that's a dumb plan. My uncle dropped out of high school and then hitch-hiked out west for a year. He is currently working for his father because lol no high school degree.

Ive been thinking about this myself a lot and i want to make a coat that has lots of pockets and spaces for equipment.

OP, if you want to do this, do it. Just realize that travelling around the world without a bro/partner is a very lonesome experience, backpackers are generally mistrusted everywhere and hostels get really fucking annoying after a while.
It costs more than people think, getting visas and organizing your trip while on the road is a huge pain in the ass and a long trip can affect your social skills and ability to fit into society afterwards.
If you just want to live an outdoors livestyle, getting a related job (forestry, gardening, hunting guide, conservationist,...) is a better idea.

You're also going to need a good pack with all the essentials. You should have a prepaid debit card with atleast $500 on it, that will get you home from anywere in the states. Join the military, leave everything behind and travel once you have money, the GI Bill for free college, and outdoors experience. It's not worth it to travel when you're that young because face it, you're just running away.

They used credit cards as primary forms of payment for convenience, cause you can use them at ATMs worldwide.
In France, they rented a car, and it got totalled in an accident they didn't cause.
The rental company then maxed out their credit card out to pay for the damage even before the whole thing could be resolved.
So now, they sat in a rural French town with about 20$ in their pockets and no way to get to the airport for their flight in a week.
So plan ahead, and use at least 3 different methods of payment.

Let me tell you a story. I went to college with this guy whose dream it was to just be a raft guide and a ski instructor out in Colorado. We went to school in Ohio. One day, he finally decided to just go do it. He got in his van, filled with some basic things, and drove out there. He lived out of his van in the mountains for five years. When he came back finally he was broke and scraggly, but he told me he would never trade those years for anything. That there was no better way to live his life.

Take a lesson from my friend OP. If you have the wanting to do it, go.

At least finish it first. Save up money while you're getting your degree in whatever so that you're more than prepared the day you graduate. Take a year off after.

Nope. Don't join the military OP, especially not now. The Army won't even pay for college anymore, you would have to use your GI bill for that. Not to mention you're not allowed to travel more than 250 miles from your duty station without taking leave.

If it's something you really want to do, then just go for it. I'm actually in a similar position, finishing up my junior year in university and then leaving the country. I stopped trying to 'do college' because it's expected of me. I know that I'll be happier elsewhere, and can finish my degree quite easily when I feel the need for one. Go for it man, but make sure you do your research. Fucking read some books about what you plan on doing

It's really not all that exciting. Just the story of a socially anxious person who befriended someone on the internet, talked daily to them for nearly a decade, and then, during a particularly dark time, was dumb enough to believe and trust the stranger when they claimed all sorts of bullshit. The guy painted a pretty picture that was an amalgamation of all my dreams and I was dumb and disillusioned enough to believe it might be possible. He convinced me all my friends and family were shit, to drop out of college, move to him, and burn down all my bridges in the process.

He didn't show his true colors for several months, at which point he'd turned into an abusive drunk who conveniently lost his job and couldn't get another one, forcing me to work three jobs. I snapped out of it the day he went on a drunken rampage and pushed a knife to my throat.

Instead of going to work the next day, I just drove back home.

If you want to do the whole traveling thing long term, I'd suggest getting a degree in Computer Science at some point. I've heard plenty of stories about people who get a job as a programmer and then convince their boss to let them work from wherever. As long as you can be awake for the hours that your company needs you and can get reliable internet, you can go wherever you want in the world.
