https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/brv.12036>I hope Elon's satellites all fall down on his Cybertruck, but that's not something that endangers humanity in the short or long term.Elon's satellites might not have a direct observable consequence like water pollution or cutting down a forest to build a wind farm, but there are the indirect psychological consequences. It teaches humanity that the night sky is unimportant and we lose nothing by polluting it.
When you realise that over 80% of americans have never seen the milky way, you'll realise why people are cheering on his satellites: to them, the night sky is an empty, black mass, where they might see the big dipper or orion on a good day. Having a satellite "constellation" is a novelty entertainment for city people who have never seen any stars. But that's only because they've been raised in an environment where they were never taught to appreciate the night sky.
Now imagine that same lack of appreciation, but now with garbage polluting the sky.
