Hey /out/, whats the most dangerous snake youve ever encountered in the wild? I almost stepped on a timber rattler while hiking in SW Virginia. The german shepherd I was hiking with actually walked right over it but miraculously wasnt bitten. Im guessing theyre not super aggressive snakes but that was an eye opener.

But to be serious, if you want to catch snakes, just start with the smaller non venomous ones to see if you like it first, then work your way up.

Growing up in Louisiana I had some scary encounters with those fuckers. Copperheads just kind of lie there, rattlesnakes try to scare you and then slither off, but cottonmouths will come at you.

Going out with the intent of killing rattlesnakes is generally a bad idea. If you kill the ones that signal, only the ones that don't breed. And then instead of a species that loudly tries to ward you off, you have something that just buries its fangs into you silently from an ambush position with no warning whatsoever.

The same one I was bitten by. An Eastern Brown. Twice now.

Seen plenty of Tiger Snakes, Rough-scaled Snakes, and various Black snakes (Red and Blue belly). The Black snakes aren't that venomous.

I saw a guy get bit by one of these by a water shed. After 15 minutes the guy started to lose his vision. The handy RFDS took care of him.
Eastern browns are a bit too curious and don’t mind having a look around at who’s shopping through their turf.

Eastern Taipan. World's deadliest snake.
Was parked at road works on a highway up north.
Fucker comes out of the sugar cane field next to the road and just starts fucking attacking cars.
Got lucky and that fucker was satisfied after attacking the tyres of about 7 cars, he fucked off across the road into the scrub on the other side.

I came across a Mulga snake that was sizing up eating my sisters cat, which was also considering its way of killing 7ft of pure death. Chased off the stupid cat with spade on the back porch and lopped the snakes head off as it reared up. In hindsight this is up there in the litany of 'dumb shit' in my life I'm not real proud of, being as far as we were from the hospital I'd have not lived it it bit me. Still the biggest venomous snake I've ever personally seen, I did see a scrub python up in far north Qld that would probably been cracking the 9-10ft mark but they don't bother people.

Yep the old Eastern is quite fearless in some respects compared to some snakes, they don't go out of their way to bite people but they also don't take any shit either!
About the only up-side is they will sometimes dry-bite people, which isn't much of a consolation at the time but you're pretty damn lucky to survive two hits from one

Stood on the same snake twice within 2 months around the yard. 1 severe envenoming and 1 moderate. The severe envenoming basically made me pass out for several hours within about 30 minutes of the bite. Hospital was delayed, so the antivenom probably didn't do much. Second envenomation wasn't all that bad, probably due to less venom load. Mostly some blood clotting problems and minor systemic effects.

Luck, I guess.

the big one is the female, fat as a soda can, the smaller ones are the males.
they go out to sunbathe on the trail i ride in my mtb.
pretty venomous, not too aggressive if you don't mess with them, but it's easy to step on them while riding or jogging in the trails.

They are venomous and get pretty big, some people claim they can get angry but all the ones I have seen have ran away or just stayed all curled up.

Myth. Cottonmouths are as shy of humans as their relative the Copperhead. The difference is that unlike other snakes that will either stay still (camouflage) or flee into rocks, Moccasin instinct is to flee towards water. If it thinks water is on the other side of you, it will attempt to pass you that way.

When they lash out, it's typically because it feels cornered and they're warning strikes. These snakes are venomous but not THAT venomous. They only kill old people/children/pets. In fact, the MOST DANGEROUS thing about these little guys is that they tend to nest in bushes alongside rivers... so if you're boating/fishing/tubing, stay the fuck away from vegetation along the sides. A nest of baby snakes that have no venom control is about as dangerous as they go.

Fun fact, they're the only semi-aquatic pit viper in the world.

Thanks and wish I’d known this the couple of times I pooped my shorts staring at that white fancy mouth. Come to think of it, they did just sit there and look scary, and no there wasn’t water behind me.
That thing with brush along the water is for real though and I’ve heard stories of them dropping into someone’s canoe.
