Alright guys, we had a few good kungsleden threads a couple of months ago and I wonder if any of you have been yet this year? I was planning on doing it the future but I have a few weeks holiday next month and feel like giving it a go, is there anything I should be aware of before I begin planning it?

Once I've reached nikkaluokta are there rail services directly back to Stockholm or should I head to kiruna?

Train from Abisko only. So you can either head back to Kiruna or go back to Abisko.

The trip is 110 kilometers. You will be passing Kebnekaise, you should consider climbing it. It's Swedens highest mountain, it will add another day on your schedule.

Protips from me to you:

Take train to Kiruna and bus to Nikkaluokta.Walk from Nikkaluokta to Abisko ( or any other station along the railroad, there are several, e.g. Riksgränsen. General heading is north and you avoid getting sun in the eyes all day and the scenery is prettier when "backlit".

The trail between Nikkaluokta and Kebnekaise Fjällstation is very easy compared to the trail from Abisko and south so it is easier as a first day hike, and you won't be so tired when engaging Kebnekaise summit the day after as you would at the end of a 100 km hike.

Consider a route along one of the side valleys compared to Kungsleden. They are just as breathtaking, but MUCH less crowded and worn down.

Choose Fjällkarta in the drop down menu up right for the best maps.

It is really usefull for planning. Norway has a similar site at ut.no for 1:50.000 cards of entire Norway.

Here you go. The blue lines are suggestions for alternate routes on the pic. On the map the dotted, purple lines are hiking routes.

I haven't tried most of my suggestions, but mainly been hiking kungsleden and some other routes in the area. But in this terrain it is pretty easy to follow the trails.

I do not know for sure, but I think Kungsleden takes 75 % of all the hiking traffic in that area of Lappland. The rest is much more deserted. Kungsleden is crowded at times.

You are welcome. It is easy too see the trails on the map though, so there is really no reason for saving them. I also think all trails are marked with cairns, but they are easy to follow when you are there. And remember you can get on and off the train at other stations than Abisko, but there are more services and stuff in Abisko.

Remember to bring mosquito repellent and perhaps a nead net as there can be a lot of mosquitoes during the summer.
