I know the story you mention, poor kid. People die by bear a lot and there isn't much sense to it really, spring, summer, winter, etc. The point was to always take normal precautions to protect yourself (bear bell, spray, muh guns, whistling while you walk, whatever) and that if you see a roaming bear in actual winter the situation is potentially more dangerous.
