Drill firemaking in Southeast Queensland, Australia

No.1696951 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
So let me get this straight:
1. create a depression in a flat wooden (softer wood because lower density is easier to create embers) board with a triangular notch on the edge of the fireboard adjecent to it.
2. Spin stick inside fireboard depression
3. Introduce ember from depression in the fireboard to tinder once the aforementioned ember exists
4. blow on tinder until it bursts into flames
This is how it works right? Any trick to it I wouldn't be aware of?
How selective do you need to be in terms of what is and isn't used as a drilling stick for it to be successful? I've considered going out and taking the stalks off these grass trees that grow in large numbers where I live. What soft woods are good?
