What should I read to learn Native American /out/ methods? I realize many of them are outdated and useless, but I am sure there is still much insight one could gleam.

How the US Cavalry survived and operated on the plains is another topic I would love to explore actually

Does anyone have insights?

I only asked about Natives originally because living here the longest, I figured they would have some neat tricks

If the white colonists ended up being better survivalists, I will gladly learn from their methods.

I have no interest in myth and legend building, just pragmatism

The free trapper took the best knowledge from each group and combined it all for his needs: surviving in the winter in the Rockies, often alone or in a small group. I'm not trying to start a racial shitfight, just saying that the white trappers were not as tied down to one area or culture as the indians, and ended up with broader knowledge.

I would not be surprised at all if you were right.

I fully believe that there are genius methods that whites ignored because of arrogance, pride, and misunderstanding

But I have also read many examples of Native American methods that are remarkably worse than settler ones to the point it's shocking they still used them

I've found books at the local public library that were very informative. Pic related is one that was written by a member of the Seneca tribe. It has a lot of information on all aspects of life as the Native Americans experienced it, including basic hunting, gathering, and tool making activities.

Read some first person accounts from the old days, which of course are usually going to be from the white perspective. “Captivity narratives” are interesting, stories of white captives, often women, who were captured and taken on long forced marches back to native territory. Again, there will be bias but they’re interesting accounts. There is also a huge difference between say colonial New England and the Great Plains in the 1870s.

The blue horse soldiers survived on the plains like modern forces fighting an insurgency, by crushing them with sheer numbers, logistics and strings of fortified positions. All this can sometimes provide isolated groups that the natives can ambush but the results were inevitable. Throughout American history the most effective Indian fighters were those who ditched all the heavy gear and used native methods, or used Indian scouts and trackers, although that didn’t work out very well for Custer and his Crow scouts.

Empire of the Summer Moon is about Quanah Parker and the Comanche and really gets into what worked and what didn’t in fighting these total badasses. My family is from Texas so I’m interested in the Comanche wars, which get a lot less attention than the Lakota, Apache, etc.
Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick covers the Pilgrims but then gets into the Pequot and King Phillip’s wars, where the New Englanders eventually prevailed with native tactics and allies. There must be some good books about Pontiac, Tecumseh and the wars around the Great Lakes region.
