Whats your go-to jacket when you hit the outdoors? I just picked up a brand new Spyder Pinnacle jacket for 175. Looking forward to using it for the snowstorm this week.

Been using the Millet ata 3 in 1 (pic) for a little over a year now, was a replacement for a hagloff jacket that was basically identical that i wore to pieces, good jacket a bit heavier feeling and less breathable then my old one tho
or the classic old BW parka with liner if its not raining

Softshell for clear weather daytrips
Hardshell for bad weather daytrips, and at least packed on any multiday
Light synth puffy for cool weather
Mid synth puffy for colder weather
Heavy synth puffy for colder weather
Down suit for coldest weather
Durable but cheap/heavy ski jacket for resort days

And then basically the same system for pants except I only have one type of synth puffy pants.

I've never hiked in -20c/4F, and anything above, a raincoat and a long sleeve base layer are enough when moving, I carry a puffy for when I stop, if things get hairy I can put the puffy and then the raincoat

Innov8 stormshell for mountain running, really amazing, I've done through very wet weather completely soaked everywhere apart from my head and upper body but still comfortable and breathable. Other outdoor brands are also now really getting into the high quality running jacket products too

OK, but that can still include yuppies. There are dozens of brands that cater to those outdoor sports and dead bird is at the top in terms of price.
Plus I thought pretty much all serious trail runners used everything Salomon (or perhaps some other brand they're sponsored by, but dead bird doesn't sponsor trail runners afaik).

Anybody found a light-ish jacket that can hold up to some rain and cold wind that won't go full tissue paper around mesquite? Seems like the lighter stuff gets punctured immediately if I have to cut through brush here.

I had a Marmont jacket that did okay until the plastic zipper teeth fucked up. So a metal zippper would be a plus, I guess.

Thoughts on Mountain Hardwear? I think for any sort of mountaineering/alpine activity they are hard to beat, good quality and price and not the meme status of other brands like dead bird, north face, Patagonia etc

Arcteryx is the same price as any other company with comparable gear. Their plastic boots are probably the most competitively priced moutineering boots out there.

You buy it becouse it's lightweight and works. Has a great warranty also. One of the few companies that is cut for non fat fucks too. It's hard these days to find jackets and shirts that aren't like 50"+ chest or wear like a poncho. They do have a growing streetwear line but that apparel isn't marketed for active outdoor. They do have flops. I personally think their windbreakers are worthless. Theres way lighter or there's way more durable for not much more weight. And the zeta line is weird. J hook belts don't work for me.
And I want to point out that their flagship alpha sv jacket is by far the best rain jacket on the market by a large margin and has been for a very long time. It's very much worth the $800+. Or buy one used.

Is this price worth it? As in, you pay 33% more but it lasts 33% longer before the water beading wears off or a seam rips? I'm looking at their Zeta jacket, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth $70 more dollars than Patagonia at my local outdoor shop.

You can reproof Gore-Tex jackets to restore the beading performance. It is something that should be done every 6-12 months anyway, to maintain the membrane of a jacket.

Zeta I don't think so. The beta and alpha lines yes. Arcteryx warranty has been good to me. It's a game of lightweight but not fall apart too quick. If your main concern is durability you shouldn't be looking at the zeta line.

Wind cheaters are coming back with the gray man shit which is a great thing. Lots of options now. Just have to sift through the reviews of idiots shitting on that gear becouse it's not waterproof.
