Obviously you see less of the landscape, but I found that the trail becomes a bit eerie. It's colder (it was below 0 for most of the night for my trail) and the mist from your respiration can make it hard to see as it reflects the frontal light. I think you feel more alone.
The great stuff is that there are plenty of stars to see, and noticing the sky changing as the dawn approaches is really nice.
In the end I didn't feel like I was up all night, I guess adrenaline does wonders.
