The advantage of charcloth is that it can light easily from a spark, but will smolder for a long time. Cotton balls, paper, etc. Can catch easily but quickly burn out.
As already stated, unless you're using literal flint and steel, not a knife and fire steel, but actual flint and steel, it doesn't have much use.
Personally, i like to use dryer lint as a firestarter. Just scrape the lint traps in your dryer or the ones at a laundromat and throw it in a ziploc bag.
It's free and it weighs nothing, but you're fucked if it gets wet. That's what the bag is for.
