Wild camping in the UK.

Is it even possible? Is it legal? Do any of you guys do it? Does anybody notice, or care? What about making campfires - is that allowed, is it not allowed but is given a blind eye, or is it something you're going to get in major shit for trying?

Britbong general, I don't expect this thread to kick off since it's 4.30 in the fucking morning here, but you never know.

I just find the biggest woodland I can, and camp in the middle of it. On the rare occasion that I do see another person, it's just a dog walker minding his own business. I make fires, fell trees, all that shit and I haven't been caught.

I do avoid private property though, but if there's no fences or barbed wire around the woodland? then you bet your ass i'll be all over that

OP here, from what I've read elsewhere that's pretty much how it works here. Apparently some places do have more active laws against it and people to enforce it, in the Peak District for example there's apparently a history of fires spreading so they crack down on camping there. I'd be interested to hear what the anons have to say though.

Get out of sight and way out of the way. No fires unless you're in a place where the smoke won't be visible for miles. Don't get pissed and shout and wreck shit. Keep it quiet and sneaky and clean and shit is fine.

High up in the mountains is my usual way of doing it.

Always wanted to do some "off the trail" camping, currently in Hampshire. Really want to go to Scotland as their Right to Roam Acts are just way too superior to England's, so that's the ideal place. I suppose a mix of Chavvy dicks and laws from the 70s/80s about squatting/raves/etc contributed to "unauthorised" use of land.

Glad I found this thread :) ideally I'd just throw up a tarp or Vango 200 Blade (off the top of my head, plan to buy one for the Missus and I) and sleep for a bit before walking at sunrise.

Op, you can wild camp in Dartmoor, and I think anywhere in Scotland legally. Otherwise its illegal, unless you ask the land owner for permission (I think). Fires I'd be pretty careful about, the rangers get a lot more pissed with them, especially with the hot weather. I've not done it, but I've chatted with some peeps who wild camp in the New Forest occasionally and they said as long as youre respectful and arent being a douche (big fire, getting wasted and noisy, leaving trash everywhere) and are pretty hidden, the rangers dont mind as much, though its still illegal and you can get fined if theyre in a bad mood. (ie, hide well, practice good camping habits, and you should be fine). Thats as much as I know, hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in as well. Happy camping bud

I looked for a place in England for a while before giving up and just finding a national trust campsite on Wast Water that I'm going to at the end of August. Not complete wilderness but far enough away. The last hour and a half of the ride is some pretty rough roads so should be good fun on my motorcycle.

Not too expensive either, about £40 for 3 nights. More if you're a pussy and want an electric hookup too.

In England most of the parks have rangers that can ask you to move on if they find you. I occasionally walk out into the peak district from Sheffield and do a big circuit (~50 miles usually), wild camping every night. I haven't been caught yet, but I usually pitch my tent late and miles away from any well used paths.

It is NOT illegal. Trespass alone is a civil matter unless you cause damage or commit some other offence. I believe they are planning to change the law to make trespass illegal if you cause harassment and distress, but this is still not going to apply to sensible wild camping.

Sensible is the key word, if you set up late, leave early, and leave nothing behind, the chances of being discovered - let alone by anyone who gives a shit - are very very low. Even if they give a shit, there's nothing they can do except ask you to leave. Just stay away from houses, farmland etc however, and the chances are you wouldn't be able to identify the landowner even if you wanted to.

Scotfag here, we have some of the best roam rights in the world.
As i understand it, england has come in line with us, meaning you can walk anywhere you please in the UK, even private land (as long as you arnt being a dick, poaching or upsetting animals and whatnot)
camping is a different matter, i think if you are OK camping on public land your fine as long as you dont light fires, i bought a stove for this reason, its not as good but you deal with it. Ive been doing this for ages with no problems
Also there are hundreds of campsites all over the country, most charge less than 10 quid a night which you can avoid if you arive after sun down and leave before sun up. Again most dont allow fires so your stuck with stoves.
In general if the police catch you youll get moved on with no problem, but you do get jobsworth fags who will book you.

it was simple for me, police came round and checked to see if i had a safe place for the guns, they contacted two references, and did some background checkups and an interview, you also had to be registered with a club.

not as easy as the usa but it's not insanely difficult.

I disagree with the american system, the background checks are not sufficient to weed out people with mental problems, or people who live with people with mental problems. Although i agree that the majority of that problem lies with your shameful mental health system.
Our system of checks weeds that out pretty effectively, therefore gun violence is almost non existent here.
The problem with our system is that after the checks are complete the government keeps a record of who owns what weapons, so they know where to send the armed police if we ever needed to violently defend our rights.
The checks that they do are a pretty serious breach of our privacy. Not only do they know where the weapons are they know where we live, what we do for a living and a lot of other things about us besides. In fact if i didnt already have to fill in the paperwork to let them know a lot of that stuff (which i do because i work with children and vulnerable adults) i might have avoided a license altogether because of the privacy violation.
Also even after passing all our check we are still severely limited in what we can own.
I envy the fact you can own exactly what you want, i would love a 1911 and a 357, and a G3/FAL (even if they do have to be gimped by semi auto fire)
A hybrid between our systems that allows any weapon to be owned by a sane citizen while not recording every tiny detail about anyone who owns a gun would be perfect

a lot of the problem with mental hospitals here is ronald reagan shut down a lot of them in the 80s and made it harder to get people commited

the us used to be a lot better about buying/owning guns, back in the day people would bring guns to school etc no problem but nowdays if you play with toy guns you get suspended and deemed a threat

Don't know or care. I put up my shelter at dusk and break camp at or before dawn. I leave nothing, damage nothing, make no inappropriate or dangerous fire and I always end up taking other people's litter away with me. So I couldn't give a fuck if some dickheads say it's legal or not. Last time I went was in the Dark Peaks.

i ask if i know they live close, because if they see a fire in there field they will come investigate if they dont know its just campers but honestly if you're miles away from anyone just set up camp, make sure you are tidy and that everything looks the way it was before you arrived IE build your fire on a rock base, dispose of your rubbish
