Is Surfing as fun as everyone makes it out to be, or is it overrated?

I am from coastal New England and even though I won't get big waves, I still would really love to try try it out. I know its too cold right now though.

It's almost like snowboarding, as a somewhat competent surfer, I surfed when I lived on the gulf coast in highschool, fyi hurricanes make the best waves the days before they actually hit. Anyway, it's real intensive on the body microvibrations going through you as you ride you get real sore the next day. Never been in the tube, but it's a surreal experience from what u hear. As a sport it's not much better than any other really, if your looking for a minor adrenaline junkie sport that's it. I really cant compare it better to snowboarding but it's on water and warm not cold, granted balance is much more important. I know it looks cool, but it is a hollywood meme, it'll get you beach babes no doubt, but that's just my opinion, I found sailing to be my /out/ activity of choice. But hey we are all different, you go and give it a shot see if you enjoy it. I will say if you have a surfing buddy its 10x more fun, so surfing 7.5/10 for me

I enjoyed surfing when i was a kid. What no one ever mentions is the speed. Your actually going pretty darn fast. Local surf shops should let you rent a board if you want to try it out this summer. Start with a longboard.

the appeal of surfing is similar to that of snowboarding.
just unlike snowboarding a nice long run on fresh powder, surfing you only get to ride a wave for a few seconds at a time.
on the plus side, whereas with snowboarding you have to commit to a full day on a ski hill, line up for lifts, deal with busy runs and conditions surfing's much more chilled and forgiving.
as long as the ocean isn't like glass then you just go out, paddle a bit, catch a wave or two, come back in and hang on the beach like normal for a bit. you can just do a bit on and off through the day as you like, which you cant really do on a ski hill.

that is 100% subjective. i think surfing looks miserable; it combines pretty much everything i dislike. but i have friends who love it enough that they literally travel the world to do it. and there are people who are in-between who do it because it's a convenient activity where they live, or their friends do it, or whatever, but if they had another option they might do that instead.

It's really tiring on your arms if you're a noob like me.
Snowboarding is easy you just get on the lift but surfing and having to paddle back out through waves every time I fucked up was really tiring.

surfing makes your whole body fit vs snowboarding where you're not really doing much physically.
skiing they get some good leg muscle from half-poop-squatting all day but enjoy your knees being destroyed by age 40.

learn the basics with a school. They'll brief you. There'll be sometime before you can actually go to the peak by yourself and surf. When you reach that stage you'll be aware of the rules.

Work on your cardio. Swimming free style is definitely not the worst training, it will keep in good shape. 75% of surfing is being able to go where you want in the water, to be actually able to go past white water and then navigate between multiple peaks (crowds, rip currents, etc). Fitness is a key element. Then you must know how to read the ocean, be able to anticipate where the next wave is going to break. And then, actually surf.

Surfed most of my life so somewhere around 14 years, normally daily.
It’s great fun, and an easily accessible way to get out in the ocean and enjoy that side of /out/ or nature.

It comes with different hazards depending where you live, in Australia (here) you contend with sizeable waves, strong currents, rips, sharks, and other retards in the water every session.

It’s slow going to learn, and you need to stay within your limits if you don’t want a bad and potentially life threatening time. Water is very deceptive, but can be very very rewarding.

As another anon said, school will skyrocket your learning curve, and give you a heads up.
Beyond that watch some videos on surfing right of way etc, to be in the wrong place you really need to be totally clueless, blind, or malicious.

Oldies, fatties, women, and all three together are perfectly comfortable at a lot of breaks with long paddles.
70% of surf paddling is technique, breathing control, and comfort in the water. Fitness is required for scary places and competition, if you’re young you do not need to go out and train swimming kek

Yeah I’ve surfed Kat Bay (?) at Phillip a few times, and probably up there as one of the gnarliest places I’ve surfed for great whites.. didn’t see any but I met a guy who had a friend bitten years ago

Surfing is very different from snowboarding anyone suggesting otherwise isnt experienced. Its also very /out/ compared to other extreme sports since the ocean is one of the most wild environments on earth. Id add that contrary to popular belief it is also a very solitary sport. I think worst place in Australia I’ve been for sharks is Hawk’s Nest. It’s right near a breeding ground and doubles as a recovery area/nursery for great whites, saw so many in my short time surfing there, and some girl got taken right off a pair of waterskiis the other year (allegedly).. but during cyclone a few years back it was probably the gnarliest point break I have surfed breaking off the heads there, literally 30 boats sitting with us way out there and most dudes towing in, if you got worked you had to climb this sheer cliff with the wave smashing into you, mega risky. Couldn’t find any photos of it so just dropped a generic Jbay shot, super worth trying for any super experienced surfers here looking for a challenge

Surfing is my /out time. The ocean can be incredibly harsh and unforgiving, but its also an amazing place where you can encounter dolphins, turtles, fish and see some amazing beaches.

Surfing itself is also super fun, once you get better you can carve figure eights in the wall of the wave or jump on the foam on the peak of a wave and "grind" over it and free fall through the air to land in the wave again and continue riding it.

Barrels are addicting. Be warned.

I surf under a constant aura of 'get the fuck out of here' in most of the spots around me that are very good because im a european. The local surf scene is exploding and i cant even count the times anymore where a local dropped in on me and then went off on me! Its crazy out there.

Just gotta get a thick skin and work as hard as possible and get all the waves these boys arent in position for without ever getting in their way and snagging a set here and there after the boys all went and show them what you got, maybe theyll give you another set if you pull off some steez shit

surfed since i was 6, really a great sport with a community of nice and relaxed people all trying to chase that next sick wave. frequent surfing gives you a fitness not seen too often in other sports, and it doesn't feel like a workout because you have so much fun doing it. just make sure you brush up on surf etiquette so the vibes are good all round.

hahahahaha are you kidding? Only soreness I have ever had apart from cuts, gashes and headaches from being smashed into breaks, are sore calf muscles after going out for a surf with a real bad hangover. You might get "sore" the next day if you're unfit, if you are in relatively decent shape you shouldn't be getting sore at all

The last two days we had 30mph offshore winds and 6-8 feet swell, so we were struggling to find some clean waves.

Then we pulled up into this bay and find this rock formation that provides a perfect protection from the wind making it light offshore and bounces back a smaller wave wedging up the real break into the craziest barrels and fast sections... Thing looked like a wavepool, just pumping out perfect waves for two hours. Now its not working anymore.
