How possible is it to go camping in Chernobyl? What type of papers do I need? Has any body gone to Chernobyl before?

No it is not possible to go camping in Pripyat. No one is allowed in there for more than a few hours. You will die of radiation poisoning if you camp there. I think they may do tours that last maybe an hour or two and I heard it is pretty pricey.

This is completely untrue. There are a fair amount of squatters in the Exclusion Zone, including people who have decided to move into their old homes again. The background radiation level is certainly higher than average, but a long term visit (years) would do nothing more than slightly increase your risk of developing cancer. The only area that could possibly give you a lethal dose of radiation would be the reactor proper, inside the CNPP. And that is encased in a steel sarcophagus which is currently being replaced with an even bigger sarcophagus.

Apparently you just need to arrange for a day pass through a tour company. The total amount of radiation you are exposed to during a tour is actually less than that you would receive from a 6-hour flight.

And it wouldn't surprise me at all if sneaking into the Zone without a pass is easy.

Actually they've bumped up security in the last couple of years, partly because of zone tourism, and partly because they're replacing the sarcophagus.

Also, the NPP isn't the only area with marked radioactivity; most of the red forest is still pretty damn nasty.

But yeah, saying that you'd get radiation poisoning from going to Pripyat is a gross exaggeration.

They do not and I mean not take trespassing lightly. The only way to get into the buildings now is to trespass. No guide is allowed to take you in the buildings anymore due to accidents/injuries.

The problem is the buildings are the best part. Houses still full of belongings. If you go and get into these buildings do not take anything with you. Taking radioactive materials outside of the zone is a bigger no no than trespassing.

I haven't been back in a couple of years but my friends in Russia say zone sweeps are higher than they have ever been. Apparently the Chernobyl horror movie and banning of being in buildings has caused people to come out more now.

Generally all metal would still be pretty radioactive since metal stays radioactive for much longer. So sitting in any of the old abandoned vehicles would also be a very bad idea, probably wouldn't kill you but would definitely be bad for your health in the long run.

It's completely safe to walk around most of Pripyat and a lot of the surrounding countryside. However, the red forest is not something you want to mess with. It absorbed a ridiculous amount of radiation and so it is still very dangerously radioactive and is full of huge wild boars etc that will fuck your shit up

I watched a docko about all the animals and people that still live there and the scientist that study there. Was interesting, think it was on the discovery channel a few years back.

how about you dont since the forests are extremely radioactive, since the trees absorbed the radioactive materials and particles. Read about the red forest of chernobyl. Animals that live there are poisoned by the growth in the forest etc etc dont go you will most likely die.
