I like to recreationaly fuck about with old ways of doing things because it makes me feel a deeper sense of understanding for past times and sometimes lets me carry less stuff. Also makes me feel comfier and more secure in life to have redundant skills and knowledge, as I always felt quite aware of the historical abnormality that is modern standards of living, how fragile it is.
However I basically want to go outdoors to just enjoy being there, or to do a specific thing like fishing, mtb, canoeing in the greatest comfort I can. So unless I set out with the idea that I might want a fire, there is not a fucking chance I am ever going to be taking an axe with me for example. All this dressing like bilbo baggins or arthur morgan too, if you can admit that you just get a kick out of larping then that's not so bad, but fuck sweating your nuts off in 2kg of wool when you can be showerproof, breathable and warm in 500g of modern down jacket that packs down into the size of a beer can.
