Any anons have experience wandering/backpacking for multiple days without a route through nature? What are the benefits or drawbacks to this sort of /out/ experience? What do you guys think—stupid or aesthetic?

I'm living in Japan and my school's been cancelled because of the virus, so I want to go explore the mountains, but it's hard to navigate with my poor language skills. I've decided that I'm going to go wander around the mountains surrounding Kyoto without a specific plan in mind, but a few destinations planned. I'll probably be gone for 4-5 days.
