Black bears are notorious pussies desu.
They rarely attack humans unless starving or desensitized due to being a public nuisance.
They hate unnecessary energy usage & confrontation as well, this is why most people can yell at them & they quickly fuck off.
As long as you assume control over the situation and assert a degree of dominance black bears will leave you the fuck alone.
If they are too close for comfort/ you notice one off in the distance, give a loud verbal warning.
They will often naturally give you a wide berth.
If that fails its key to show no fear and make your self as big as possible.
If necessary make a false charge while yelling at them, this will often freak them out and make them think your more trouble then your worth.
It's how wolves, badgers, and wolverines deal with them in the wild as well.
