How do you fellow anons think about moccasins, or some other full leather shoe? I think it would be neat to make a pair. If they were good enough to serve native peoples for thousands of years then why don't more people wear them for out activities today?

Arrow Moccasins was the best using the fattest Swiss cow leather I've seen in my life, but the owners passed away not too long ago. There's Carl Dyer but it's ridiculously expensive.
I once saw a Southwest moccasin using a thick hard leather bottom with a suede upper that looks utilitarian.

I occassionally snag a pair of Russell's on eBay but also expensive and they tend to make stupid mistakes to quality.

If the double sole is handsewn you can relace a new sole on it yourself, but good luck getting high quality leather cheap.

I have a pair that I made out of moose hide. They are ideal for outdoor summer use around the farm. They are big enough to fit in some old Sorel insulated insoles. I leave them in year round along with some Etnies skater shoe insoles.

If its wet outside the leather acts like a thin sponge but I hardly feel it with the inserts.

During the winter they are extremely slick. I've almost lost my spaghetti more than once carrying wood inside. I heat my home exclusively with wood so I just wear my moccasins indoors BC the floor can get chilly in the morning while the fire is burning low.

Make your own and make them your own. I beaded some wild roses on mine. Probably going to make a new pair. They sell for like $400 up here in canuckistan.

These native peoples were also still using Flint axes and knives. Their technology was outdated 4500 years ago, what makes you think their shoes are the Pinnacle of human footwear?

Because they hold no advantages over modern footwear, except that they are easy to manufacture yourself.

I'm a plains native from southern alberta. Usually they're only worn for ceremonial purposes these days, but my mom had a pair made with a nice thick leather sole and she would wear them everywhere (hiking, walking around the city, etc..).

I have seen normal leather boots get a little mold on them
moccasins are shit
leather bottom not good

That's exactly why I want some mocs, but all I can ever find are gay fashion hard rubber outsole versions or far too much dosh.
I don't have the discipline to make my own, so I will stick with my valenkis for now

To much concrete and gravel. That'll destroy mokassins almost immediately. hard leather soles (as european nobility used until the middle ages) slide easily on grass instead, making them unsafe, which is why peasants wore wooden shoes. Only way to get around both these problems is to nail the soles, effectively creating something like Reichswehr combat boots (google 'Knobelbecher' if you don't know what they look like). Those are actually quite nice to wear, but they make a lot of noise on hard surfaces and are thus badly suited to hunting.

I have a few pairs of Russells and I think they're awesome. Best all purpose boots i've ever used. South 40 birdshooters off ebay for 280 are my go-to boot. Super waterproof, durable, comfortable, protective, re-sole-able, re-stitch-able.. I may never buy another brand of shoe.

Just buy Sperry Topsiders, they're the modern moccasin lol.

On a serious note go for it, mocs are comfy and easy enough to make. Or if you want to buy check your local renfaire, for some reason moccasin boots are a thing there, despite having fuck all to do with Europe or the renaissance. They tend to be pricey ($400+) but well made by hand.

You laugh but your comparison isn't a bad one. A Sperry topsider even have the benefit of a rubber sole, but none of the support or protection like a true moc. A worn out pair would be your socially acceptable alternative. If you wanted to be mega autistic you could probably remove the rubber sole and replace it with a single layer of leather for the full experience.

I've hiked icy scrambly hills in topsiders when I got caught off guard on vacation in Arizona once. Shit was pretty dire.

Except that they're extremely quiet. Primitive hunters use them to sneak up on animals. They're pretty neat; I (not OP) want to try them out, too.

leather soles are horrible at doing anything other than being really comfy on your feet. the fact that native peoples in NA made their shoes and boots entirely out of leather (even tribes that hated each other and had no reason to copy fashion styles) is less a statement on the superiority of moccasins and more an indication that they had nothing else to use.

To be fair, most european shoes in most periods had leather soles (albeit made from several layers starting in the early modern age). Hobnails are only really worth it if you're walking long distances on stone roads.
