What are some good hiking packs for under $100? I'm a newbie. It's a shame you can't trust any reviews on Amazon.

I actually have the one in your pic. It's not as spacious as you think it should be for its size and it's kinda heavy. That said the straps hold well, it sits comfortably and has carried me through a couple of week long treks. If you're a poorfag it's a perfectly functional pack, if you have the cash to blow you can definitely do better.

I have the Teton sports explorer 4000. I've literally hiked hundreds of miles on it and it still holds up like a champ despite it's age. it's 65 liters so more than enough space but it's 5 pounds. So it's more heavy than the more modern and premium bags but it's served me well. I'm probably going to stick with this bag for years because if it ain't broke. it the big brother to the bag in the picture. I've loaded it with way too much weight several times with no sign of damage. the mesh pocket on the outside kinda sucks but who really needs that. it doesn't have a hip pocket but I've strapped a bag to it and that's worked okay but most people will just use a cheap fanny pack. the pockets on the outside are nice to keep the essentials accessable and organized but it can be tempting to pack more than you need with all the space. when I hike in groups it's been helpful to have that extra space when some else has over packed and needs some help. it has a compartment for a three lieter bladder but I only use a two leiter one. the pockets on the side are only stitchded on the sides to the bag so that you can slide poles behind them and that's proven handy. the brain doesn't detach so that's a bummer. the pockets on the side are pretty tight for a nalgene but doable. don't expect to be able to shove a nalgene in there with the pack on and with one hand. it comes with a rainfly in the bottom which is a good barrier between the sleeping pad and the moist ground but it's pretty small so if you're carrying anything bulky on the outside it doesn't do a great job covering everything but it's manageable. I've bought a separate one that is pretty big. I can't think of anything else about that bag so I hope this rant helps.

if you want better for more value, you have to buy used.

three options:
>REI garage sales
>ebay
>craigslist

of course, the disadvantage of buying used is you can't return if it doesn't fit you. But a lot of nicer ones can be had for cheap this way

Try an old external Kelty. It’s going to be a little heavy and not as feature rich as more expensive packs. It worked for generations before internal fames though and they carry heavy weight well. Also fit is important so watch youtube videos on how to fit a bag.

I personally wanted an Osprey Aether 70 and I kept perusing eBay till I found a NWT one for a bit under 200 ($100 savings)

You’d be surprised how many items on eBay or craigslist are “used one time, didn’t like it/don’t need it”

Kelty is a solid brand but that looks like a daypack. A good daypack, but not big enough for an overnight trip. Buy it anyway though, that's a steal for $5.

eBay! A lot of people get into backpacking and camping to only go once or twice. So you can find some great deals. For example, last week I gave $99 for a $450 mystery ranch pack that’s pretty much in brand new condition.
Cheap and steep now also a good place to look.
