You can hit the internet to find what channels are being used in your area. FRS is plenty safe even though you technically shouldn't. MURS is okay. GMRS needs a license but it's just a pay-for thing no test. Avoid your local repeater and always listen first if not sure.

Getting licensed is easy and is only 15 bucks. That said, the seething boomers in this thread are hilarious. There isn't a lot of traffic outside of digital anyway. Even if you CQ on any old frequency, there just isn't much going on.

I'm learning HAM too. No licensed yet, gonna take the exam here soon, but I do know about criminal law and radio usage. It is illegal in most states to broadcast without a license, it's especially illegal to broadcast on police and emergency frequencies. They will find you because you're not registered, and you won't be able to get a license after that. So just hold out and take the exam like me fren.
