Once you gain a degree of mental self control you can utilize will to replace negative thought patterns with positive. I do not claim to be any sort of master with it, but I have definitely benefitted significantly.
The first step is focusing on breathing and allow no other thoughts to enter. If any thought arises, simply allow it to evaporate like a cloud, and this also goes for any thoughts of not being "good at it" due to thoughts arising and sneaking by for a few seconds or whatever.
When I first went through the divorce it was these kinds of practices that got me through it, and I assure you it was a profoundly low point.
I built personal custom mantras, just positive affirmations like "I can and will get through this and find ways to enjoy life again" (or whatever personal specifics) and repeated them to help reprogram my thought patterns.
