Slowly been acquiring some gear to get into the woods and away from society for a bit during all this COVID shit.

Still a hammock camper through and through but during my last /out/ing I got hit by 30 mph winds when it was 20 degrees out. Not severe, but definitely uncomfortable and underquilts are so fucking expensive. Thinking about just being a ground camper now.

Bivy sack + green bag is a solid three-season setup. Add the black during winter. I've slept in the bivy + green during a tropical storm and woke up bone dry. Felt like I was getting massaged to sleep.

They're heavy, bulky, and trust-your-life-on-it-I-literally-have effective and durable. In that order. Expect to have to lash the stuff sack outside your pack if you're combining the black bag with anything; by itself it will fill up the bottom of your pack. Even the green bag is a lot.

I like using the bivy with a more packable bag. I don't like the idea of babying my gear and often wind up bedding down on rough ground and partially rolling off my sleeping pad, so the extra durability the bivy has over basically any civilian bivy is very welcome. I've looked at a few other military bivies and the design seems superior to other militaries' bivies.

I do heartily recommend the bivy for use like that with better, more compressible sleeping bags, but I wouldn't recommend the system except as a "I have no money and need to survive out in extreme shit" move, unless you're in some situation where you need a deep deep cold bag you never have to carry around, like if you're living in a van and never camping-camping.

Used them in the military. The green bag alone is good down to maybe 60F (comfortably), the black bag down to maybe 35F, and both you're good down to maybe 0F. And the camo outside is of course the water proofing layer. I bought one when I got out because it was so good. But it is bulky and heavy even in the stuff sack.

Used to own one. They're rated for -40° for 4 hours whatever that means. They wear out quickly, though, if you use them often.
I still have the bivy, through. Use it with a different sleeping bag.

Do the people complaining about Cheaper than Dirt not remember that literally every vendor had ammo at double the "normal" price for five years after the 2008 election? CtD is just faster to act.

The gortex bivvy is awesome but the sleeping bags are bulky as hell. I only have 2 problems with the bivvy:
1) When it rains, you can put the flap over your head, but this leads you to start breathing your own moist breath.
2) No bug protection. I made a net to put over the opening, but it wasn't that great because it just drapes on your face.
