Are these a meme? I got a hold of some from a friend who had to cancel a trip, the names and ingredients are enticing but are they worth the money if I want to keep buying some? If I don't own a dehydrator, any simple recipes and methods you've settled on as favorites work /out/?

They're great for saving weight but fuck me they're expensive, I'll only eat them if I'm really trying to save on weight and pack light, otherwise? Save your money, bring some normal food, some instant noodles even. Just as light but cheaper as they aren't sold as /out / specific food. They have their use but if you like money use them when you actually need to, not just on a smaller trip

Some of them are decent, most of them are gross and all of them are too expensive. For trail meals you can make cheaper, better stuff with some creative shopping at the grocery store. For emergency kids they're not bad, but you can also order bulk freeze dried ingredients and put your own together for less per serving.

You can use your oven to partially dehydrate stuff. Spread your ingredients out on a sheet pan, set the oven to its lowest setting and prop the door open slightly. It won't be as eternally shelf stable as freeze dried, but you can make bags of dried vegetables that will last a couple of months or you can dry out and pulverize sauces for later use. As for other options just take a stroll through most grocery stores these days and you'll find all kinds of dried/instant options. Noodles, mashed potatoes, rice, refried beans, etc. Old fashioned cured meats like salami are great, packet tuna, etc.

Dehydrated food is the only way to pack food for trips over a certain duration. There are brands like Heathers Choice that are more nutritionally balanced or you can make your own.

People saying you’ll starve if you eat nothing else are correct that you have to starve yourself a little on week+ backpacking trips to make weight but wrong that it’s the fault of the food itself.

Mountain house makes some decent stuff. Have not tried the other two. With the cost of each meal, rather save money and use a dehydrator to make my own.

Dehydrator is a worthwhile investment but Trader Joe’s has a ton of dehydrated and freeze dried stuff for whatever reason. Best dehydrated /out/ meal I’ve had was basically pesto pasta with freeze dried broccoli and sun dried tomatoes from there. Tasty and didn’t make me feel bloated like mountain house does. Also never get their breakfast hash or anything with dehydrated eggs it is truly awful.

I prefer the Back Country brand - spag bol and cooked breakfast are really tasty. Only available in AUS/NZ though, I believe.

I buy their 2 serve bags. Some muesli for breakfast and one of these for dinner is filling and nutritious enough to sustain me quite comfortably.

They're only $14ea ($8USD). If you think this is expensive, you should get a job.

You can carry a months worth of these things and a Jetboil in a backpack with ease. You'll also need to carry water if it isn't readily available, but they don't need much.

You can eat them straight out of the bag, so you don't need to carry any plates/bowls/containers - just a spork.

They fare higher temperatures better than canned food.

I mean, I could go on. But tell me how they aren't based as fuck?
