It should be lightweight, with a balancepoint near the shaft so it's easy to handle, have a point on the lower end of the blade for hooking logs and a thick plate on the back of the eye for hammering wedges or stakes. There's a reason why this shape has been the general-use type all over europe for 1500 years (and in america for 400 years) before massproduced chinese crap took over. Nowadays, most felling hatchets still have a shape like that, but are usually to heavy since they aren't meant for finer work anymore.
As for the attachment, ring-shaped wedges are best as they distribute pressure the most evenly. If your making them yourself, wooden nails also work.
