Looking to get a new canoe/kayak with the corona bucks. I'm thinking about something like this Old Town Discovery 119. What does out thing about 1 man canoes?

dont listen to them, canoeing is awesome.you can load it right up with camping gear and fishing gear or whatever else you want. But definitely get one with two seats even if its something small like 14 feet, you can still solo it no problem. there really isnt any reason to get a single seat canoe like that, if your strapping it to the roof of your car a foot or two dosnt really matter right. and something that short will have some difficulty tracking

Can't really answer the question without more information. Ocean, lake, river? Plan on fishing on it, or just hauling gear around? Also paddles range from super cheap to crazy expensive so plan some of that into your budget

I’ve been thinking about getting into canoeing too. Tired of my heavy, wet, sit on top kayak, plus I’m mostly in a delta so fairly still shallow water, and the maneuverability would be nice.

I want to build my own though. Can’t decide between a pretty lapstrake number, a boring stitch and glue, a skin on frame, or a crazy tortured ply design (check out the gorewood 14 or 16 free plans and instructions and it looks beautiful... but no guaranteed outcome stressing the ply like that. )

To me one man canoes are kind of a specialty item that most people don't need. Unless you are doing expedition trips in Boundary Waters type country where there is a lot of packing/unpacking for portages a kayak is a lot more fun and functional for a solo paddler. Saying that the solo canoes I like resemble kayak hull shapes much more than the traditional canoe type (think Wenonah Prism) but think a hard requirement is 14ft+ in length just for the tracking it provides when paddling with a single paddle.

A used one. You can get very good boats at low prices depending on the popularity of boating in an area. If you're looking at something like in the OP pic then Old Town makes those too at a decent price but kayaks under 10' have limited uses. The solo canoes that I'm familiar with are for whitewater and otherwise you're better off with a kayak and dry storage. The best way to get good answers is to know what you're going to do with the boat and where before you ask.

The field and stream Eagle run 12 is pretty solid for the price. I have one and I have camped off the thing for a couple seasons now. Its a bit flimsy but you get what you pay for.

I've played around with one of those before. They're definitely sturdier than those $50 Intex pool toy kayaks, but I wouldn't go dragging it over rocks or paddling through shallow tide flats. As long as you've a foot or two of water underneath you you'll be fine. Don't get too ambitious with it, though. It's not an open water boat. i.e. Don't paddle any farther from shore than you're willing to swim in that cold water.

I like to canoe when it gets hotter in the summer and I’m tired of sweating my bag off backpacking. I have a solo cano for just me and a biG aluminum one for when I’m with frens. Great way to get around. Perhaps the most civilized of all.

and this, get a paddling PFD. I didn't think it was important in shallow water either until I got slapped with a wave and sucked halfway under a boat in a tidal current. It would have been a much bigger problem if I wasn't floating with big foam pads on my chest. If anything it will keep your torso off of the bottom.
