There are legit rain forests, temperate lowland forests, grasslands, deserts, a snow capped 11,000 ft mountain (in your backyard), 2 14ers (3 technically, and Shasta is 5.5 hours away), white water rafting, skiing, an ocean, mountain forests... It’s all like right there.
I mean a place like West Virginia or whatever is breathtaking and beautiful and etc., but the variety of what’s in and around Oregon really can’t be topped. How many outdoor manufacturers have their headquarters in Portland? The state is synonymous with the outdoors, and there’s a reason for that.
I grew up in Louisiana and spent a lot of time /out/, but at the same time I met people that had never even been on a day hike. No camping, no hiking, no fishing, no kayaking. Nothing. They had never done anything outside of a city or town or suburb. I can’t say the same for Portland. Literally everyone has done at least something outdoors.
