total noob looking to go /out/ for the first time soon and i have a couple questions
-how do you guys bring enough water?
-is a weekend overnight trip a good start?
-favorite maricopa county /out/ locations? thinking of hitting san tan mountain since its closer to me. no clue how much is BLM land though

2-4 one liter bottles for a day or two, fits in backpack pretty easily.

If you're acclimated to Maricopa, maybe. As a total noob you should probably start with hikes. Go all over the valley; you'll find places you like and places you don't.

Probably South Mountain, but it's packed because of Corona.
>favorite barely outside of Maricopa?
Superstitions, Pinal County. Also packed because Corona.

Tell someone where you're going and when you should get back. You'll probably keep at least 1 bar cell coverage most places in the valley. Lastly, literally everything that's maintained by state, county, or municipality in Maricopa is packed because of Corona.

Probably do Sugarloaf Trail in Sedona today or tomorrow. Frame right, Coffee Pot Rock in background. Fav in the Valley: McDowell Mountain Preserve trail network.

AZ is pretty great, so you'll have a lot of options once the Corona clears up. If you don't want to wait and you've got a vehicle that can go off-road you can definitely find some neat spots. Parking in a nice lot is nearly impossible at any popular trails. If you can, maybe check AllTrails for highly rated, but very unpopular trails (like sub 100 ratings). They're virtually empty even with the plague going on.

No, start with day hikes.

Superstition Mountains are the King and Queen of /out/ in Maricopa country. Go there.

But you've picked a terrible time to start /out/ing in central AZ. It's about to get real fucking hot real fucking fast. I straight-up do not hike from May to August unless it's a rare night hike with my friends.
