Best Boot for Outdoors and Indoors?

Hi all,

Do you have any advice for a pair of outdoors boots that would also still look nice if I polished and cleaned them up?
I don't like having multiple pairs of shoes. I want an all-purpose boot that I can wear with long pants into the office or for nice events, but can get them dirty as hell on the weekends in the outdoors.

1. those are hard to clean up properly

you never know. i once picked up a pair of boat shoes for 30 bucks at ross that looked fine in the office and survived multiple seasons in the rockies, flooding, and garden work. i dont know if it was a fluke, but ever since that happened, i have been looking for a shoe that can do that again.

lol, how much of a prissyfoot nancy are you? i beat the shit out of my /out/ shoes. even leather boots get scratched and torn to hell. there's no way they'd clean up to formal standards.

I don't recommend doing this, but I understand why you would want to. What are you doing outdoors? Just walking on a trail or off-trail mucking? You mention polish so you're implying leather, not exactly ideal for outdoors these days.

Remember, when you combine two things you lose the best features of both, so you're likely to have a below-average outdoor boot and below-average work shoe.

i do a lot of garden work and stable cleaning on the weekends. i have a small ranch. cowboy boots used to fulfill this function when i lived in texas, but i have moved north where people frown on wearing boots in the office, and part of my job is making people trust me and not think im some weirdo with cowboy boot (this wasnt a problem in texas obviously)

lots of people who actually work in tough conditions in agriculture buy boots and shoes for life. and that's a lot more taxing work than just scampering around or rock climbing every few weeks. my dad's cowboy boots have lasted him over 55 years now with a few resolings through ice, mud, and flooding.

do your research and buy a good pair of lifelong leather boots/shoes for between 100-300 that will last you your life. my sons will inherit my boots.

OP, most posters here don't understand what you are getting at, but I think I do. In Australia, it is common for farmers who live way out to own leather work boots with straps on them. They wear these while outside, but also clean them up and wear them to formal occasions with great pride. I do not know if this is what you mean, but it is our version of the cowboy or riding boot in many ways.

Why isn't this ideal? Weren't most military boots made of leather until WW2? I thought this only disappeared due to pricing issues and mass production. An obvious exception would be jungle boots, which have to be very breathable.

Is this a money issue? Be aware that having at least 2 pairs can save you money in the long run, because that way you can let one pair completely air out and dry for a day while wearing the other, greatly increasing life span

Not that guy, but it's probably a weight issue for some. Also a matter of preference I guess, I personally don't mind if my boots weigh a kilo each and take a bit longer to break in, I take the sturdiness over the ultralight fully synthetic stuff that usually falls apart within a couple months

A lot of leather boots are incredibly light weight without having or using synthetics.

Not all leather is the same, also depends on how it's treated.
Did a 50km day hike in leather boots last summer (humid 25°C weather), for that I chose my lighter "summer boots" (non-Goretex, non-waterproofed), plus wearing thick merino socks, and at the end of it my feet were barely moist, no blisters at all
