You never strike a ferrocium rod with the blade section of your knife.

Also they come with metal tabs that you could use instead.

Or use a separate carbon steel striking device made from an old file.

Super reliable. Works when wet. If you have good tinder you have a fire. Lighters and matches will fail and break. A ferro rod won't.

Punched a hole in a small steel tin and keep it in your back pocket make the fire fill with more organic matter and chuck it in the fire dig it out when the gasses stop burning and let it cool.

a bic literally has a ferrocerium rod with a striker built into.
Just take the cover off if you run out of fuel. much easier to aim the sparks as well

That doesn't make it a primitive technique, it proves isn't. Ferrocerium rods for lighting fires first appeared in lighters as the flint. The ferro rod (metal match), I don't know. I'm assuming fairly recent. >>1727328 says at least 45 so 1970 which is consistent with what I searched.

Naked flame from lighter or match doesn't want to work in cold damp conditions. Ferro rod sparks much hotter, you want to create shavings from it without igniting them, then once you have enough, set them off. Will be much hotter than just a lighter. which should make it easier to get an ember, also hotter and longer lasting than a naked flame which could be very hard to keep burning in wind, and then that ember will dry out your tinder as you blow on it, eventually catching. Hopefully.
Also in extreme cold when your hands are truly frozen it can be a hell of a job trying to flick a bic, vs gripping your rod and knife.
Obviously lighters are usually easier, and have benefits of their own. Carry both if you need to

This shit happens every thread friend. Welcome to zoomer Logic. If they read or see a picture about any item with a date then to it means it was in production, easily available, and everyone had one. Ignore the fact that commercially available ferro rods didn't show up till the late 70s and 80s with the surplus from the war emergency kits.

Less advanced than 2020, sure. But to be "primitive" you need to go back to pre-Industrial Revolution.

you can make anything work in bad conditions you need more preparation. you can waterproof matches with candle wax for example. works extremely well i can vouch for it.
also if a lighter gets wet you shake it out blow into it try thrice and it will ignite. it's a myth it may not work if it's frozen but then you put it in your inner pocket for a minute.
