climbing ropes come in 3 types: single, twin and half.

>half2 rope system where you don't attach both ropes to every piece of pro. most halves are rated as halves/twins so you can put one or both ropes through each piece of pro, as appropriate for the route. useful on wandering routes to decrease ropedrag.
twins and halves tend to be significantly smaller diameter than singles, though modern singles have gotten pretty damn skinny.
