looking to pick up a small stove for backpacking. anyone using anything or have any opinions? I've only ever used campfires but they're illegal in a place I want to cook fish at.

Started using my homemade Fancee Feest stove. Really like it. Cost $3 and works well. Have to make a aluminum foil windscreen for it and make sure to add the fiberglass cloth in between the can and the tin.

I've filled one canister at least 20 times now with no problems, regular butane has a lower pressure than isobutane/propane

Used it this morning. It’s got its limitations but if you want to boil x amount of water for very little cost and almost no weight it’s fantastic. If I am going to do some fancier cooking I’ll cook over a campfire but for tea or a dehydrated meal it’s great.

got it as a half-assed christmas stocking stuffer and its literally replaced my $120 MSR whisperlite setup, going strong for like 4 years now, no sign of wear or corrosion

I use one of these (not my pic tho, one i have is an older model too). Belonged to my dad but he uses a pocketrocket style one now so didn't need this one anymore.

Between his use and mine, it's lasted for at least 10 years, probably closer to 20. No signs of wear at all. I like the pocket rocket ones too but these you can turn the can over which is useful for snow camping or other really really cold times innawoods where the fuel mixture is affected by temperature.

People here are telling you to get something cheap but beware. You don't wanna be /out/ and have your stove fail. Best case scenario you have to cut your trip short and eat cold food for a few days. That sucks. Worst case, you have no way to treat water, or you NEED hot water to make your food edible and can't do that either.

Solid fuel: Never (Unless you are doing UL). Esbit are the main brand, but any shit will work really, ultra cheep can be using BBQ lighter blocks

Alcohol: Only if you are a hobo or UL, but can still be fun in short summer camps where you are not remote. Use a Trangia for reliability, homemade can stoves can be fun but I wouldn't rely on it.

Gas: Best choice, unless you are doing anything extreme, ultra long term or remote. Pocket rocket is your goto, Coleman F1 lite for UL, or a hose and stand setup if you are expecting cold weather.

Liquid fuel: A good choice but best suited to expeditions rather than normal backpacking trips and camping. Use a whisperlite for reliability but dragonfly is a good alternative.

Campfires: Never rely on them but they can be fun if done safely.

The little gas canister stoves or fires if you want to cook. The alcohol stoves work good depending on design but they are mainly for boiling water or heating not really cooking unless you have a way to control heat output or make one that burns slower.
For fish besides campfire or wood grill I would suggest the canister stoves because it's easy to control the heat output and I assume you're using a pan. People cook on twig stoves too but that may be banned for you, I have a twig stove I made too but have only used it a couple of times.

I haven't used this on a trip yet because well you know corona, but I was sold on how it packs flat and you can use any kind of fuel with it. Other similar stoves I was looking at were kinda bulky.

How do I connect my screw-on stove to these butane bottles?
I can get these a lot cheaper than the typical stove bottles with the screw connection.

I use a Tomshoo titanium stove, but there are other brands on aliexpress that look identical. Mods include wrapping some steel mesh on the bottom part so the coals don't fall through and a flame stopper I cut out from a tea tin. It lets me grill small portions without burning them (too badly) and reduces hot spots when frying.
It also doubles as a wind shield for a gas stove. The original idea was to carry a cat food can and some alcohol and use that inside of it, but after field tests, alcohol is too finicky and unreliable for anything other than quickly boiling a cup of water when it's not too cold outside.

For extremely cold weather, you need gasoline or kerosene. Both are expensive.

Finally, there's also a lot of small, folding woodstoves. imo, those aren't worth getting, as preparing the wood is to much of a hassle. but if you want something like that, just buy the sheet metal and a built it yourself. Commercial products like the bushbox are extremely overpriced.
