Passed the whole "glide thru a piece of paper" test. When I'm done with either, I take off the thick leather belt I wear and strop my knife on that. I touch my edge up now and again with

To anyone wanting to get good at freehand sharpening: buy an Opinel. One of the locking ones. They're carbon steel and really thin. Perfect for learning to put a good edge on. And the shittiest gas station folder you can because you can work on putting an edge on something thicker afterwards. It will take a while to learn but just do it while watching TV. I'm not the best, but I can certainly put a usable edge on stuff freehand and it really didn't take too long to learn. You really do just kinda get a feel for it after a while. Obviously a system that locks the blade in will give it a perfect edge, but freehand sharpening is a worthwhile skill to learn. A Fallkniven DC4 is not very expensive and you should be wearing a good belt anyways and you can strop with that. Ray Mears uses one. He puts 4 little nails in the sheath to secure it to a log by hammering them along the outside the hold it snug. Then if he's near his vehicle, he rolls down the window and finishes the edge on the edge of the window.
