Most people don't though. Even people living at 8k tend to have problems at 12-14k.
There's also this weird medical phenomenon where people like me and others that have lived their entire lives at 8k or higher will spontaneously develop HAPE or HACE for no apparent reason. Just living your life and suddenly you develop life-threatening altitude sickness and have to move lower for the rest of your life.
the truth is there's no such thing as permanent acclimatization. There's always a risk of altitude sickness or death above 8k feet even if you're born here.
