I'm not against art, at all. I'm an artist! But art can say and celebrate different things, and shitting the image of some big, violent "Great Man" over the landscape or exalting him at the cost of untold hours of others' labor is an odious and toxic thing to say.

I don't even, like OP maybe does, think "nature" should stay untouched. But it shouldn't be subordinated to people's dreams and nostalgias of violent domination. Pic related, "Spiral Jetty," by Robert Smithson, is probably the most iconic piece from a movement called "Land Art" /out/ people will probably either love or hate. Personally I love it.

Nonburger here. Its retarded. Its understandable when stuff like this is made by ancient civilizations over hundreds of years using slave labor and stand as monuments to how fucking vapid they were at the time, but in modern times this is graffiti for white niggers.
If no one blows it up because "its racys" in the next decade we will have a monument of just how vapid we are today too.
This is not an attack on burgers, it goes for everyone. Pic related, its second biggest rock in my country - they fucking put some faggots that flew over atlantic ocean and crashed because "muh heroes".

The Black Hills area is full of rocky features so carving up a couple is less of an issue (and the carvings are much better done).
If there were 10+ stone mountains in Georgia it'd be less annoying.

The bas-relief looks like shit and from a distance it just looks like someone scratched a square in the rock face.

Domes like that and Enchanted Rock in Texas are spoopy as fuck to walk on. The slope gradually just gets steeper and steeper and at some point you'll lose friction and fall, but where exactly that is is quite indefinite. How far do you go? Do you risk it? How grippy are your shoes or feet?

I’ve heard Stone Mountain is the largest batholith of its kind in the U.S. and Enchanted Rock is the second largest. Former Texasfag here who spent a lot of time climbing around there and yeah it’s ultra spoopy. Supposedly the Comanche wouldn’t have anything to do with it. As far as Stone Mountain, as a descendant of Confederate soldiers I find it kind of tacky and don’t care much about the cavaliers who led my poor white forefathers to misery and PTSD. I loved the theme park when I was a little kid and had a plastic replica of it. It’s history, it’s “art” and now will be a magnet for people who want to do like the Taliban did with those giant Buddha statues. Whatever. I’ll focus my environment fanaticism elsewhere.

It does get gradually steeper when you climb but it's a pretty easy climb, more like just going uphill for a while right up until you're near the summit when it gets pretty steep before leveling off. Don't know if they still do, but my dad said when he was in high school the cross country team would run up and down the mountain every morning.

The problem with your theory is that work on this carving did not begin until 1964 long after all of the men depicted had died. In fact, stonewall Jackson died during the war and Lee died in 1870. The monument was built by admirers of these men, the men themselves had no involvement in or knowledge of the monument on account of said men being dead. So the men depicted on the monument had no intention of "leaving a mark on eternity" as you put it because this monument was not their initiative.

I see no issue with the monument.

The Black Hills we sacred to the Indians, and the US government broke a treaty over it once gold was discovered and trail of tears them. Then dynamited statues of their famous leaders in there.

You know, back in the days, nature was everywhere and plentiful, but also dangerous. Yeah, it's a rock, so what? Yeah, it's a massive forest, and? It was everywhere, nothing special. On the contrary, you could make it special by putting something more interesting on it. That was the mindset back then, based on the life the people led. Nowadays, we're oversaturated with civilization, most people have completely lost any touch with nature, and so nature becomes something special, something extraordinary, and when we see a sign of civilization on nature, it ruins the "specialty" and drags it back into our normal life. Back then, it was different. Your feelings are modern feelings.
