How does an American Anon become a lumberjack? The only jobs I see are in Oregon. In British Columbia they have a huge industry and you actually get certified to do it but I've seen nothing similar in the states

Look up tree services. There's a company in your area that takes contracts from utility companies and governments to clear trees infringing on infrastructure. Super dangerous work though, people in my company died on the job and every pay stub came with all the injury reports for the pay period. It was a packet in a manila envelope every two weeks. If you want to get into logging for lumber/pulp that's a whole different ball game. Most of those outfits are small and ran by your local hill billies. They won't have a website, or even an office sometimes, and they won't hire you unless you know what you're doing, so you may as well just start with a tree service anyway.

What this >>1738568 guy said. Unless you grow up in the industry it’s a hard field to get into, especially now that 98% of the cutting operations are done mechanically. I sometimes see courses being offered now and again through local forestry/ landowner Co-op s.
Being able to run a saw safely is a good skill to have. Making a pay cheque can be a different story especially if you are paid by production. Good luck to you man. Always wear the safety gear the stuff works.

If you just wanna pull cord and thrash and you're starting from nothing you might consider your state or regional conservation corps. A bunch of them have pretty solid saw programs. It's a long and winding road from there to production timber falling, and as other anons have pointed out a lot of it is being mechanized anyway, but it can be a good pipeline to tree service work or utility lineman type stuff.

I should also add that you will be broke as a fucking joke in a conservation corps, but a) you usually get room and board b) you'll probably get on a saw sooner than you would in the private sector if you really are starting from scratch and c) logging stands to take a pretty big hit if construction slows down.

Must suck working for/with a bunch of retards, treetard of 5 years here working for one of the biggest tree companies in America and we basically never lose a person. Serious accidents are pretty uncommon as well.

There’s more forest land in North America now then there was 100 years ago. Tree planting is a huge industry. And not all plantations are monoculture. The main issue I have with tree planting is when the mill does a site conversion. Planting species that is desirable to the mill even if the forest logged in the first place was a totally different species.
I hate planting trees could only average 1500 a day instead of say 2200. It’s hard work. I try to promote natural regeneration and coppice growth on the hardwoods that are application If I do have to plant it gets contracted out.

In Ontario its not too bad as say Eastern Canada. Irving will cut Acadian forest and replace it with engineered Black spruce.
Ontario will replace blackspruce, jackpine, redpine, whitepine, and white spruce.

people average $400 a shift in Ontario these days. prices are up to 13/14 cents
