I've been lurking /out/ for a few months now, and something has struck my curiosity enough to ask a question.
Why do so many people carry portable stoves? Am I not understanding something about just cooking directly on an open fire?
Is it because of the concentrated flame, convenience, smoke, or what?
Please explain this.

Plenty of factors can contribute to one's decision to cooking that way.

1) Time - Some hikers may hike long distances during the day and don't want to build a fire because they are tired. Easily solved by a portable stove.

2) Weather - If it's pouring down rain wood will be wet, it's usually hard to light a fire if you can't find dry wood. Also, you can use a stove in your tent's vestibule if you are careful. Some people will even go as far as cooking in their tents if your stove doesn't put out dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide.

That's just pertaining to hikers.

Regular camping is usually a different story, people to cook and grill over open fires usually.

Good question, OP. There are a lot of reasons.

Reasons stoves are better:
> no impact to camping area (no trace left)
> no need to gather firewood
> don't fuck up your pots and pans with soot
> much faster to setup
> less danger of fire getting out of control
> more control over cooking temperature (simmering and the like)
> don't expose your position to others (only really matters to hunters and stealth campers, but still)

Would like to get a pot/pan+stove combination for $75-100.

That's at least 5 days of cooking for one person for just over 1 pound...and it all packs into the cook set with room to spare. You don't have to go with what I listed but you get the picture.

The stove and canister of fuel will fit inside the pot with room to spare.

Pic related: everything except for the water bottle and canteen cup fit nicely inside the pot.
Since then I've added a little tiny bottle of cooking oil, which also fits inside the pot.

People also have good reviews about the chinarocket $7 amazon stove, which is basically the same thing as the pocket rocket.

canister stoves put out incredible amounts of heat, and have excellent simmering control.

then there's the omnifuel/whisperlite internatty, which are the heaviest of the "backpacking stoves", but they will run off any petroleum based fuel.

I don't usually use a windscreen, I usually tuck the stove between some logs or my pack or something like that.

Or I use some heavy duty aluminum foil.

Thing is with the canister stoves, you can't enclose the canister in a high heat area, it has the potential to violently explode.

It can be, but I got that little canister stand that's pictured for like $8 at eastern mountain sports, it's very much worth it. I've cooked in my GSI basecamp pots, which are much, much larger then the pot in that picture. You just have to be careful.

that looks OK, but one of the selling points on the standalone "stowaway" pot was the insanely awesome handle that also holds the lid on and keeps everything from falling out while it's stowed away in your pack.

the GSI cooksets (which I also have) share this feature, but I don't like them as much. They're a great product though, and we use it instead of the MSR pot on longer trips with 2 people.

I forgot to add, people say that the canister stoves will not work properly when it's below freezing. I've had problems with mine at and below about 25F, the fuel needs to be warm enough to vaporize. That's where the liquid fuel stoves excel (omnifuel, whisperlite.)

But then I watched a documentary on everest last week and saw that people were using canister stoves at 24000' elevation when it's freezing out, so I dunno if they had some magical canister fuel or if I'm doing it wrong, but it seemed to work fine for them.

Burning a fire has no long term effects on soil, and most of the time it returns nutrients to the soil if foliage was burnt.

All DNR and State Park land in the area has a very strict burn ban and the National Forest land in this county and the ones near it also have a burn ban outside of FS metal fire pits. And in North Central Washington State the amount of land belonging to the DNR, State Parks and National Forests is a huuuuuge amount.
Stoves are ok though.

The other solution, not mentioned in the backpackinglight.com article, is to get a stove with a fuel hose to the canister so it can be flipped over. This causes the liquid butane to be pressed against the valve by the propane gas and gives a better burn. The MSR Universal and WindPro will do this. The Primus OmniFuel can also be adapted for this use.

For me, the only reason I'd ever carry a stove is because I'm camping at a time where fire is banned, or if I'm camping with other people who insist on camping in a "camp ground", most of which are state run affairs that ban the gathering of wood.

By myself, though, stoves are only for mid-summer when even the smallest fire is a major risk for hundreds of surrounding acres.

Reminder that alcohol stoves aren't overpriced either. I can understand the will to save money, but it's not like you're even saving $10, not to mention, your soda can stove will never be as good.

I use pic related myself, and I never looked back. After years of being used and abused, it still hasn't failed, unlike countless can stoves that either got crushed or melted.

Actually some of them are pretty sophisticated and can perform as well as or better than, say, a Trangia. They're just more flimsy is all (but if you crush it it's easy to make another).

Cooking with wood is more difficult, as it's harder to control the heat (you have
raise or lower the pan / pot) and requires hard wood for grilling (burning pine
will ruin your steak).

Also, I don't want meal time to be a hassle; spark up the propane stove / grill, cook
food, enjoy. Who wants to build a fire and wait forever for coffee to boil first thing
in the morning?

The other citation is still about wildfires and their effect on grazing land, and is still not relevant to campfires (natural vs man-made in that context means started by lightning vs by some entitlement asshole's tactical campfire getting out of control during a burn ban, which is the largest anthropogenic cause of forest fires).

My favorite combo that i have been using for years is this:
Msr pocket rocket stove
Msr titan kettle
Msr/coleman fuel canister
Heavy duty tin foil as windscreen.

Fuel and foil fit in the kettle, stove and lighter fit the the little red case.

Light, compact and idiot proof. Boils quickly in wind or rain and relitivly cheap. The titan kettle was deff the most expensive 4 oz of metal i have ever bought, ($50/60) but i think it was worth it.

I made one of those and a wood gassifier stove the same size. I think the gassifier has more potential, but I'd have to fool around with the rocket stove a bit more before deciding that for sure.

Some stoves, like the Biolite, can convert heat to energy and charge cellphones (or other stuff by USB). Its nice to have a charge when you're out for several days and might need to phone for help, assuming you get a signal.

I carry a solar charger plus an extra phone battery, would really hate to need my phone and not have it. Also I use my phone to call in every day when I solo camp.

I carry a stove to use if i'm not wanting to stay long but still want warm food and if i'm staying over night I'll get a fire going, helps fight the boogie monster, chill, seeing, cooking and about a million other things.

A wildfire is all of the fuel in an area burning off over that entire area. A campfire is a lot of fuel gathered together and burned on one spot. It's putting much more heat into the soil than a wildfire will, because it's much more concentrated.

If you load it too high, this is correct. I was messing with my homemade one last night ( >>175091 ) and figured out the height of the fuel shouldn't be above the top of the upper intake holes. I also noticed it burns everything to fine ash, so you can move the pot, push the ash down with a stick, drop in more fuel, and put the pot back on and be ready to go some more in just a few seconds. After playing with the fire a bit, I was able to boil a pint of water in 4 minutes.

Extra batteries are the best solution. Solar is unreliable. And the little chargers can't keep up well with heavy 'modern' power hungry devices.

With most 'in' devices having unremovable batteries it makes it more difficult. You can buy battery 'banks' which you charge and then plug your phone into for juice.

AA battery ones exist as well. Or you can make your own via Youtube.

I have been on some hikes. We always bring a 3 L for 3 people. Then it is just big enough for cooking pasta or rice.

Personally, I am a big fan of hobo stoves.

I don't see the point of lugging around a stove that uses gas: You'll always have to bring fuel (gas canisters), and if you run out that's it, so you bring some extra gas just in case. All while wood is usually abundant, you can collect as much as needed, it doesn't take up any weight or space in your pack.

I usually bring a can of food, it's a little heavy but it's ready to eat even cold, so it's perfect for the first night, because it'll be fine to eat even if you don't find a good spot to make a fire.
After that, I make the can into a hobo stove and use it to cook dried food and water. I bring a pack of Esbit tabs just in case.

Of course you can just dig a pit and build a fire, without a stove. But where I usually go camping, people usually aren't too happy about me digging holes in the ground and burning stuff innawoods. The hobo stove reduces the visibility of the fire immensly.

What place exactly are you talking about where there's no wood at all?
Remember, even most deserts have some sort of dry grass/cactus/the occasional dry creek bed where you can find something to burn. Hydration is the real problem in those areas.

You can find stuff to burn lots of places in the desert, but you can't burn it. Park rangers give you expensive tickets for that shit. If you're an ass about it, they give you handcuffs and a free ride. I'll stick to my penny stove and not fuck up my desert.
